Position Purpose
This is an entry-level driver training role. The primary purpose of this position is for the driver to learn and/or gain experience in driving a tractor-trailer or straight truck intrastate and/or interstate. This involves operating on local, over-the-road (OTR), shuttle, and/or overnight routes to deliver and unload various food and food-related products to customers.
All routes are expected to be completed safely and in strict accordance with all Company policies and Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. The Driver Trainee will communicate and interact with customers, vendors, and co-workers professionally, ensuring all services and duties are executed according to preferred work methods and customer service practices. This role functions as a team member within the department and organization, as required, and performs any duty assigned to best serve the company.
Position Responsibilities
The Driver Trainee will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:
- Attends and successfully completes the PFG Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program as required. Ensures all training documentation is completed and maintained per requirements.
- Rides with and assists a driver trainer in executing deliveries as required. Follows all instructions and directions provided by the driver trainer.
- Performs all required safety checks (i.e., pre/post-trip) including inspections of the tractor/truck and trailer according to Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Inspects tractor/truck and trailer to ensure they meet company safety standards and takes appropriate action as needed. Reports all safety issues and/or required repairs.
- Follows all DOT regulations and company safe driving guidelines and policies. Immediately reports any and all safety hazards.
- Inspects the trailer for properly loaded and secured freight. Performs count checks of items and verifies customer invoices of products that have been loaded. Checks and accurately completes all required paperwork associated with freight in a legible fashion. Moves the tractor to the loading dock and attaches a preloaded trailer as needed.
- Drives to and delivers customer orders according to the predetermined route delivery schedule.
- Unloads products from the trailer, transports items into designated customer storage areas. Performs damage control checks on items, scans, and contacts supervisor about removing orders according to company policy. Verifies delivery of items with the customer and obtains proper signatures. Collects money (cash or checks) where required. Loads customer returns onto the trailer and secures trailer doors.
- Ensures that the tractor, trailer, and freight are appropriately locked and/or secured at all times.
- Unloads damaged goods and customer returns and brings them to driver check-in, completing necessary paperwork. Unloads all equipment, materials, and removes trash from trailers as required.
- Completes daily record of hours of service and enters them into the log in accordance with Federal DOT, state, and company requirements.
- Performs general housekeeping duties in the tractor, loading dock area, and keeps trailers clear and clean as required. At the end of the shift, secures all equipment and completes all necessary paperwork.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma/GED or Equivalent.
- For Internal PFG Candidates: 1 year of service in good standing as outlined in the PFG Entry Level Driver Trainee or Dock to Driver Training Program, able to attain CDL Permit and DOT Health Card.
- Valid CDL A.
- Must be 21 years of age.
- Meets all State licensing and/or certification requirements (where applicable).
- Clean Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) for the past 3 years.
- Successfully passes a post-offer drug test.
- Successfully passes a road test.
- Attains or possesses a valid current DOT Health Card.
- Able to hand-lift and utilize a two-wheeler, lift gate, and/or other equipment to move and/or stack product cases/freight of varying size and weight throughout the shift; product generally ranges from approximately 60 to 90 pounds, depending on the location.
Compensation
$250.00 a day
