The Tone:
This is an internship at Town of Clayton, located in Clayton, NC. This role offers college students majoring in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Management, or related disciplines practical experience and exposure to municipal engineering operations within a rapidly developing community. The intern will contribute directly to projects that support the Town’s vision for accessibility, greenways, diverse living options, and a strong business environment.

The TL;DR

• Pay: $15 hourly
• Team: Engineering Department, assisting various departmental staff
• Mission: To provide practical experience and exposure to municipal engineering operations for college students in a rapidly developing community.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Comprehensive Planning: Assist the Director/Assistant Director with planning projects, including public outreach, program development, process updates, and mapping activities.
• Project Management Support: Provide support to Project Managers by reviewing payment applications, coordinating field activities, performing field inspections, and attending meetings.
• Environmental Compliance: Aid the Stormwater Engineer and Environmental Compliance Specialist with MS4 permit tasks, including SCM inspections, inventory, and plan reviews.
• Field Site Inspections: Assist Engineering Technicians with development project inspections for infrastructure like sidewalks and water/sewer mains, and conduct routine erosion control inspections.
• Asset Inventory & Assessment: Perform inventories and assess the condition of Town-maintained assets, such as street signs, roadways, sidewalks, and pavement markings.

The Must-Haves
• Background: College student with a high school diploma or GED and a basic understanding of Civil Engineering principles.
• Experience: No specific years of prior work experience are required for this internship.
• Skills: Proficiency in computer usage and applicable software.
• Bonus: Actively pursuing an Associate, Bachelor’s, or Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
