Position Purpose

The primary purpose of this Engineering Intern position is to recruit college students who are majoring in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Management, or related disciplines. This role offers practical experience and exposure to municipal engineering operations within a rapidly developing community.

Key Responsibilities

As an Engineering Intern, you will be involved in a variety of tasks crucial to the Engineering Department’s operations, including but not limited to:

  • Assisting the Director/Assistant Director with comprehensive planning projects, which may involve public outreach, program development and creation, process updates, and mapping activities.
  • Supporting Project Managers with various project management tasks, such as reviewing payment applications, coordinating field activities, performing field inspections, attending meetings, and taking detailed notes.
  • Aiding the Stormwater Engineer and Environmental Compliance Specialist with tasks related to the Town’s MS4 permit, including performing post-construction SCM Inspections, conducting SCM and Stormwater facility inventory, preparing and mailing annual inspection letters, creating tracking spreadsheets, coordinating field inspections, and performing plan reviews.
  • Assisting Engineering Technicians with field inspections of development projects, such as those for sidewalks, driveways, public water and sewer mains, and associated apparatuses.
  • Performing routine erosion control inspections to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Carrying out administrative tasks, including filing, scanning, and organizing historic information to ensure adherence to record retention policies.
  • Performing inventories and assessing the condition of Town-maintained assets, such as street blade signs, MUTCD signage, roadways, sidewalks, curb and gutter, and pavement markings.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum Requirement: High school diploma or GED.
  • Preferred: Currently pursuing an Associate Degree, a Bachelor’s Degree, or a Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.

Necessary Special Qualifications/Requirements

  • Must be a College student.
  • Must possess a basic knowledge of Civil Engineering principles.
  • Skill in computer usage and applicable software is required.

When a salary range is posted, the actual salary will be based on relevant competencies, knowledge, skills & abilities, internal equity, and budgetary considerations pertinent to the advertised position.
