Design Research Intern

Overview

HKS is seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Design Research Intern to join our multi-disciplinary R&D team. This role offers a unique opportunity to be deeply integrated into the research and development process, working under close supervision with specific and detailed instructions regarding tasks and expected outcomes. The intern will primarily focus on collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing crucial data from our HKS offices. This will involve employing various methodologies such as surveys, focus groups, and observations to gather insights into our operational environment and design processes. A key aspect of this role may also include the exciting challenge of building dashboard prototypes to effectively report and visualize these data insights, contributing directly to our understanding of building performance and impact.

Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive support to interdisciplinary project teams across various research tasks, ensuring smooth execution and collaboration.
  • Actively assist in the collection and compilation of data for multiple ongoing research studies, maintaining accuracy and integrity.
  • Contribute to both quantitative and/or qualitative data analysis efforts, applying appropriate methodologies and tools.
  • Perform meticulous data cleaning, preparation, and organization, ensuring data readiness for analysis.
  • Document all data preparation processes and analysis methods thoroughly, maintaining clear and reproducible records.
  • Conduct focused literature reviews on research topics related to building performance and impact measures, as needs arise, to inform and contextualize studies.
  • Assist with the preparation of compelling presentations and other visual communication tasks to effectively convey research findings.
  • Manage and contribute to multiple projects concurrently, fostering strong collaboration with team members.
  • Actively participate in officewide initiatives and/or intern-specific projects, culminating in presentations to a peer group, showcasing learned skills and project contributions.

Qualifications

  • Must be currently earning a graduate degree at an accredited school.
  • Typically possesses 1-2 years of relevant research experience.
  • Proficiency in statistical analysis is required.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite is preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively and effectively within a team environment.
  • Strong capability to effectively meet deadlines and manage time efficiently.
