The Tone:
This is a full-time role at [Company], located in Indianola, IA. This position plays a critical role in empowering first-generation, low-income, and/or disabled college students to navigate and succeed in their academic journeys. The Student Support Services Advisor manages a dedicated caseload of approximately 70 SSS participants, delivering essential program services through individualized advising, structured college success courses, and engaging group workshops. This role is fundamental to fostering student development, learning, and advocacy, directly impacting participants’ ability to achieve their educational and career aspirations.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Advise Students: Provide comprehensive academic, holistic, and developmental advising to SSS participants, assisting with course selection and graduation planning, FAFSA completion, financial literacy, graduate school exploration, and developing academic success skills and habits.
• Program Development: Assist with the planning, development, implementation, and delivery of all SSS programs, services, and events to ensure comprehensive support for participants.
• Data Management: Maintain accurate and updated student data, records, and files, safeguarding confidentiality and ensuring compliance and effective tracking of participant progress.
• Academic Support: Support the department’s academic initiatives by contributing to tutoring efforts and teaching/developing curriculum for SSS courses such as ENG 195 and other cohort-specific courses.
• Staff Supervision: Recruit, train, and supervise the StormConnect Bridge Program Teaching Assistant, overseeing their contributions to program delivery and student mentorship.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Master’s degree required in education-related fields, higher education administration, guidance, or counseling, or other fields with relevant experience.
• Experience: 2+ years of professional experience in education/teaching, English teaching credentials, and computer proficiency utilizing Colleague, Excel, and Microsoft Word.
• Skills: Strong written and verbal communication skills, effective interpersonal skills requiring above ordinary courtesy and tact, ability to maintain confidentiality, ability to meet deadlines, and close attention to detail.
• Bonus: Work experience in higher education, experience with TRIO/college access programs or supporting underserved populations, personnel supervision, academic advising, curriculum design, lived experience consistent with TRIO student population, or knowledge of collegiate academic and financial assistance procedures.
