Intensive Case Management (ICM) Intern | International Rescue Committee (IRC)

The Tone:
This is an unpaid internship at the International Rescue Committee (IRC), which operates in various U.S. cities, with a specific focus on the Intensive Case Management (ICM) program in Richmond, VA. The IRC is a leading international humanitarian organization, founded at the call of Albert Einstein, dedicated to helping people survive, reclaim control of their future, and strengthen their communities after being devastated by conflict and disaster. This role is crucial for supporting the most vulnerable refugees in achieving self-sufficiency by addressing barriers to health and wellness and facilitating integration into mainstream society.

• Mission: Helps vulnerable refugees achieve self-sufficiency by addressing unique needs, barriers, and goals through intensive case management.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Client Support: Assist with client check-ins (phone, in-person, or video) and provide comprehensive support to address areas of vulnerability and health.
• Case Planning: Assist with ICM client intakes and assessments, then develop individualized plans with detailed action steps based on identified needs.
• Resource Navigation: Educate clients on U.S. healthcare and benefits systems, explore community resources, and assist with internal and external referrals to outside organizations.
• Practical Assistance: Provide transportation to and attend appointments with clients, assist with collecting signatures, completing paperwork, delivering items, and navigating various systems like medical, mental health, and education.
• Documentation & Communication: Maintain thorough and accurate case file documentation in the IRC’s database, organize digital files, and communicate client concerns and potential challenges to the ICM caseworker.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Interest in working with the refugee community and a respectful awareness of their varied backgrounds, beliefs, and values.
• Experience: Strong interpersonal skills are essential for effective client engagement and case coordination.
• Skills: Ownership of a car, a valid driver’s license, and car insurance; access to a computer and willingness to comply with IRC acceptable use policies; willingness to be flexible and accommodating to client needs.
• Bonus: Willingness to transport clients in your personal vehicle.
