Early Career Environmental Engineer | WSP

The Tone:
This is a full-time onsite early career position at WSP, located in Portland, ME. WSP is a global engineering and professional services firm dedicated to addressing complex environmental challenges through assessment, inspection, and remediation projects. This role matters as it directly contributes to environmental protection, mitigation efforts, and the professional growth of individuals within the environmental engineering field.

• Mission: Provide technical assistance for environmental investigations and contribute to protection and mitigation efforts related to various environmental concerns.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Data Collection & Analysis: Collect and compile environmental data from various samples including air, soil, water, and sludge for comprehensive engineering analysis, operating under general supervision.
• Engineering Calculations & Reporting: Perform essential engineering calculations, develop precise cost estimates, meticulously validate collected data, and prepare detailed, accurate reports.
• Technical Project Support: Assist with fundamental professional environmental engineering tasks concerning air emission sources, hazardous or solid waste facilities, water supply facilities, industrial/agricultural sites, and general pollution sources.
• Documentation & Record-Keeping: Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and field/work site notebooks, ensuring all records meet or exceed industry standards.
• Safety & Compliance Adherence: Strictly comply with all safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, which includes meticulous maintenance of sample collection, precise location data, statistical documentation, and comprehensive logbooks.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering or a closely related discipline, suitable for an early career professional seeking to engage in environmental assessment and remediation projects.
• Experience: Possess a proven track record of upholding workplace safety, demonstrating the ability to adhere to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies in an onsite environment.
• Skills: Exhibit excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, and analytical skills; possess familiarity with relevant environmental laws, regulations, compliance practices, and concepts for reducing hazardous substances; demonstrate competent interpersonal and technical communication abilities for diverse audiences; and show proficient self-leadership with strong attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization in a dynamic work setting.
• Bonus: Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification; familiarity with discipline-specific design software such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, or ArcGIS; prior internship experience related to the degree of study and engineering discipline; or active membership in local professional practice organizations.
