Mechanical Engineering Internship | Naval Nuclear Laboratory
The Tone:
This is a summer technical internship at Naval Nuclear Laboratory, available across various NNL facilities. NNL is dedicated to the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, focusing on advanced nuclear propulsion technology and training the Sailors who operate our nation’s naval nuclear reactors. This role is critical in ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. Navy’s submarine and aircraft carrier Fleets, contributing to deliverables that directly impact national defense. What You’ll Actually Do
• Research & Development: Research and develop new technologies and concepts for nuclear propulsion systems.
• Design & Testing: Design and test software, components, or integrated systems related to naval nuclear reactors.
• Modeling & Analysis: Develop models and perform data analysis to support engineering and operational objectives.
• Operational Support: Support operations and develop process controls and procedures for nuclear fleet applications.
• Project Impact: Collaborate on deliverables that directly impact the Navy’s nuclear fleet and national defense initiatives.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Pursuing a Bachelor, Master, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university. Candidates must have completed at least their first full year of college by May 2027.
• Experience: Must be actively enrolled and continuing in a degree program throughout the entire 10-12 week internship period.
• Skills: Foundational knowledge and capability in researching new technologies, designing and testing systems, developing models and performing data analysis, and supporting operations through process control development.
• Bonus: A cumulative minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0. Prior paid or volunteer internship, co-op, or work experience in a related field. Experience with the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD), or Naval Nuclear Program.
