Job Description

The Naval Nuclear Laboratory is offering internship opportunities for college students to gain valuable work experience during the summer of 2027. These NNL Summer Technical Internships provide an immersive professional experience directly within your field of study. Interns will work alongside world-class engineers, scientists, researchers, and technicians, receiving real-world experience and mentorship. You will contribute to state-of-the-art research and development, including:

• Researching and developing new technologies and concepts.
• Designing and testing software, components, or integrated systems.
• Developing models and performing data analysis.
• Supporting operations and developing process controls and procedures.

As part of a team, you will work on deliverables that directly impact the Navy’s nuclear fleet.

The NNL Internship is a 10-12 week program starting in May/June 2027. Successful completion of the program may lead to a return internship or a full-time employment offer.

Required Combination Of Knowledge And Skill

Candidates for Mechanical Engineering internship positions must meet the following criteria:

• Pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
• Must have completed at least their first full year of college by May 2027.
• Must be enrolled/continuing in a degree program throughout the duration of this internship.

Preferred Skills

• Cumulative minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0.
• Prior related internship, co-op, or work experience (paid or volunteer).
• Experience with the Department of Energy (DOE), Department of Defense (DOD), or Naval Nuclear Program.

Pay Range

$25.00/hour – $42.50/hour

Salary information is a general guideline. Hourly salary is based upon candidate experience and qualifications, as well as market and business considerations.

• All candidates must be U.S. citizens.
• Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter.
