Job Summary: How You’ll Contribute

As a Full-Time Switchboard Operator, you will be the primary point of contact for all incoming calls to the hospital, playing a crucial role in the facility’s communication hub. This position demands critical thinking, decisive judgment, and the ability to operate effectively with minimal supervision, particularly in a high-stress environment. You will report directly to the Director, Health Information Management.

Key Responsibilities & Contributions

  • Receive and direct all incoming calls to appropriate house extensions or patient rooms.
  • Handle calls originating from in-house extensions, routing them as necessary.
  • Execute in-house paging, manage code activations, and operate the dial-a-page system.
  • Respond to and manage all emergency calls and pages, swiftly contacting appropriate personnel as the situation warrants.
  • Manage all intercom paging and provide general information to both in-house and external callers.
  • Maintain up-to-date Switchboard files, including current room numbers, discharged patients, and new admissions.
  • Update and maintain employee information for disaster procedure files, ensuring readiness for critical situations.
  • For Evening, Night, Weekend, and Holiday Shifts: May be responsible for contacting on-call personnel as requested by the Nursing Supervisor, and taking/relaying messages to on-call individuals via paging, beeping, or direct calls to their homes.
  • Ensure all pertinent information on the bulletin board and disaster policies and procedures are kept current and accurate.
  • Proactively stay informed of all changes and updates that pertain to switchboard operations.
