Job Title: Integrated Ceramic Photonics Summer Intern (Summer 2026)
Job Summary
The Advanced Photonics Group within the CTO Office at Coherent Corp. is dedicated to advancing the state of the art in highly integrated ceramic optical circuits for optical communications systems and their underlying subsystems.
We are actively seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Integrated Ceramic Photonics Summer Intern to join our CTO team for the Summer 2026 term. In this dynamic role, you will gain invaluable hands-on experience in the implementation of advanced integrated ceramic photonics devices for high-speed optical data links. You will have the unique opportunity to work alongside industry professionals and contribute significantly to meaningful projects that support our team and broader company objectives.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
- Contribute to the design, simulation, assembly, and characterization of cutting-edge integrated ceramic photonic devices to perform critical functions such as optical isolation and amplification for high-speed optic fiber links.
- Execute the design, simulation, fabrication, and testing of integrated ceramic optoelectronic components utilizing industry-standard CAD tools, including but not limited to Cadence and Lumerical FDTD.
- Assemble and configure optical test benches to precisely characterize integrated ceramic photonic devices.
- Perform comprehensive data collection and compilation, leveraging powerful tools such as Python/ML, MATLAB, and ChatGPT.
- Collaborate closely with your assigned mentor and team members on a daily basis, actively participating in weekly reviews to discuss progress and insights.
- Deliver consistent weekly progress reports, culminating in a comprehensive final report accompanied by a formal presentation.
Education & Experience
- Education Level Required: PhD candidate (must have completed 2+ years by the internship start date).
- Majors: Material Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics.
- Relevant coursework or extracurricular experience: A significant plus if you have experience in semiconductor physics, EM theory, fundamental optics, and hands-on design and fabrication of ceramic optics or integrated optoelectronic devices.
- Eligibility: Open to currently enrolled students or those who have graduated within one year of the internship start date.
Skills & Other Requirements
- Adaptability: Eager to learn and thrive in a fast-paced, innovative environment.
- Organizational Skills: Demonstrates strong attention to detail and effective time management.
- Hands-on Experience: Proven experience and executed research projects involving the implementation of thin-film ceramic and garnet optoelectronics devices.
- Metrology & Fabrication: Hands-on experience with electrical and optical metrology equipment to characterize ceramic and garnet optical components. Familiarity with integration processes and fabrication tools such as sputter and deposition systems with advanced silicon and InP platforms is a significant advantage.
- CAD Tools Proficiency: Knowledge and practical use of CAD tools including MATLAB, Python, Lumerical, and FDTD.
- Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential.
- Teamwork & Independence: A strong team player who is also capable of working independently when required.
Additional Information
Internship Duration: 10 – 14 weeks.

Working Conditions
- This role will be based on-site in our facility at Budd Lake, NJ.
- Regular use of a computer and other standard office equipment is necessary.
- Completion of safety training on Laboratory Equipment is required.
Physical Requirements
- Sitting for extended periods while working on a computer or in meetings.
- Use of hands and fingers for typing, writing, and handling documents.
- Occasional lifting of objects or materials up to 20 pounds for administrative tasks.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing effectively.
- Observe and strictly practice all safety rules within the laboratories.
Safety Requirements
