Sign Shop Technician – University of Virginia
The University of Virginia’s Facilities Management (FM) Department is seeking a Sign Shop Technician. This role is crucial for creating dynamic visuals used across Grounds and UVA Health, encompassing a wide range of signage and graphic production.
About the Facilities Management (FM) Department
Facilities Management (FM) supports the extensive research, academic, and patient care programs at the University of Virginia. With over 1,200 dedicated employees, FM is responsible for the daily operation, repair, and maintenance of UVA’s buildings, infrastructure, and Grounds, as well as other University-owned and leased properties.
Key Responsibilities of the Sign Shop Technician
The Sign Shop Technician will be responsible for a diverse set of duties, including:
- Fabrication: Creating a variety of signs using specialized equipment such as computer engravers, woodworking tools, and large format printers. This includes vinyl decals, environmental graphics, name plates, banners, ADA and wayfinding signage, and event resources.
- Design and Layout: Utilizing layout and design skills to ensure all signs adhere to University branding guidelines and national standards.
- Installation: Installing interior and exterior signage, employing hand and power tools, and interpreting construction drawings/floor plans and maps to maintain the aesthetic appeal of buildings and grounds.
- Equipment Operation: Operating a wide range of small hand and power tools (e.g., saws), as well as larger equipment and vehicles, including pick-up trucks, tractors, snow blowers, mobile platforms, and Bobcat.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhering to all applicable traffic laws, operator instructions, required clothing and protection, safety standards, and federal, state, and local regulations.
- Delivery Services: Performing special delivery services, which involves loading items, safeguarding them during transit, personal delivery, and obtaining necessary signatures.
- Site Cleanup: Performing clean-up tasks in areas after signage installations in buildings, classrooms, offices, and job sites.
- Event Support: Installing and removing furniture for special event setups or remodeling/renovations.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience
- One year of sign shop or related experience, such as the creation or manufacturing of industrial signs and displays, is required.
- Carpentry experience in fabrication and installation of signage is strongly preferred.
- Experience with commercial signage is highly preferred.
Licensure
- A valid Driver’s license is required.
Preferred Computer Skills
- Knowledge of creative programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe InDesign, or other similar commercial programs, is preferred.
Compensation and Benefits
Salary
The anticipated hiring range for this position is $18.00 to $22.00 per hour (equivalent to $37,440 – $45,760 annually), commensurate with experience.

Physical Demands
The role involves:

- Work may occur in a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions and environments.
