Job Title: Nursing Student (Pending Licensure)
Location: St. Marys Regional Hospital, Grand Junction, Colorado
Scheduled Weekly Hours: 6
Hourly Range: $17.50 – $17.50 (Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience)
About the Job
This position is for a nursing student who has successfully completed a minimum of one medical/surgical rotation within an accredited nursing program and is in the process of obtaining their nursing licensure. All individuals hired into this role are expected to secure nursing licensure as quickly as possible. Upon licensure, the expectation is to transition into a new graduate nurse resident position, subject to availability, for the next available cohort.
This role operates under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.
Essential Functions
- Responds promptly to patient care needs, including answering call lights, assisting patients with hygiene care and nourishment, and obtaining vital signs.
- Communicates constructively, effectively, and timely with all members of the care team.
- Assists with the insertion, care, and removal of Foley catheters and nasogastric tubes.
- Checks and accurately documents patient vitals, glucose levels, and input/output. All patient care documentation requires the additional signature of a Registered Nurse.
- Performs secondary assessments as supplementary to the primary assessment conducted by a Registered Nurse.
- Assists with patient and family education regarding the patient’s disease process, medications, and interventions outlined in the plan of care.
- Provides assistance to nurses and physicians within their defined scope of practice and demonstrated competency.
- Adheres rigorously to all infection prevention standards and actively contributes to achieving patient experience goals.
- Assists with patient transfers, admissions, and discharges as directed, in full compliance with the principles of safe patient handling.

Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a student in good standing within an accredited School of Nursing program.
- Completion of a minimum of one medical/surgical rotation is required.
- Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS-HCP) Certification is required upon hire, or must be obtained within 60 days of hire with prior approval.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion of all clinical coursework, with the exception of the final/capstone course.
- One (1) or more years of previous experience in a healthcare setting.
Physical Requirements
- Visual Acuity: Ongoing need to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, and identify equipment and supplies.
- Communication: Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors requiring verbal communication, as well as the ability to hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, especially during emergency situations.
- Manual Dexterity: Manual dexterity of hands and fingers is required to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing necessary information, and medication preparation.
- Lifting and Movement: Expected to lift and utilize a full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment, typically including items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
- Mobility: Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.).
- Standing: May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
- Driving (if applicable): For roles requiring driving, expected to drive a vehicle which requires sitting, seeing and reading signs, traffic signals, and other vehicles.
