The Office of Career Services is dedicated to supporting students and recent graduates in their career development journey. This office facilitates various resources, workshops, and events to enhance career readiness and connect students with employment opportunities.

Primary Purpose of the Position

The Graduate Assistant-Career Services Intern will play a crucial role in supporting the daily operations of the Office of Career Services. This position offers a motivated graduate student the opportunity to assist with individual student appointments, workshops, employer events, and administrative tasks. It is an ideal role for individuals interested in higher education, counseling, human resources, or related fields, providing practical experience in a dynamic university setting.

Duties and Responsibilities

Student Support & Advising

  • Provide one-on-one and small group assistance to students with essential career development tasks, including résumé and cover letter writing, job and internship search strategies, and fundamental interview preparation.
  • Support students in effectively utilizing various career tools and platforms such as Handshake, LinkedIn, and designated career assessment resources.
  • Offer immediate walk-in assistance and scheduled appointment support, operating under the direct supervision of professional staff.
  • Refer students to professional staff for more advanced or specialized career counseling needs, ensuring appropriate guidance.

Workshops, Programs, and Events

  • Co-facilitate or independently lead workshops on critical career topics, including résumé writing, interview skills enhancement, networking strategies, and career exploration.
  • Assist significantly with the planning, coordination, and logistical execution of various career-related events, such as career fairs, employer panels, information sessions, and other special programs.
  • Support classroom presentations and participate in outreach events targeting student organizations and campus partners to promote career services.

Employer and Campus Relations

  • Assist in the scheduling and coordination of employer information sessions, tabling events, and both on-campus and virtual interview arrangements.
  • Greet and provide comprehensive support to employer representatives during their visits and at career events, ensuring a positive experience.
  • Help maintain accurate employer records and contact information within the career management system.
  • Collaborate actively with academic departments, student organizations, and other campus offices to effectively promote and integrate career programming.

Administrative and Assessment Support

  • Assist with monitoring and promptly responding to inquiries received via the career services email inbox and phone.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student appointment records and notes within the career management system, strictly adhering to privacy guidelines.
  • Support data collection efforts and reporting activities related to appointments, events, and student outcomes to inform service improvements.
  • Assist with the administration of surveys, feedback forms, and basic assessment projects designed to enhance the quality and effectiveness of services.

Marketing and Outreach

  • Help create and distribute engaging promotional materials, including flyers, digital signage, emails, and social media content, to advertise available services and upcoming events.
  • Contribute creative ideas and develop content for career services social media channels and newsletters.
  • Conduct brief classroom or organization announcements to increase awareness and utilization of career services among students.

Other Responsibilities

  • Attend all required staff meetings, training sessions, and professional development opportunities.
  • Participate in special projects that align with office priorities and the intern’s professional interests, providing valuable contributions.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the supervisor, contributing to the overall success of the Office of Career Services.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in or accepted into a graduate program at FSU.
  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and sensitively with diverse student populations.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and consistently exercise sound judgment.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office or Google Workspace).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in student services, advising, mentoring, customer service, or related roles.
  • Familiarity with key career development topics such as résumés, interviews, job search strategies, and networking.
  • Experience with career platforms like Handshake, LinkedIn, or similar tools.
  • A strong interest in pursuing a career in higher education, student affairs, career services, counseling, or human resources.
