Editorial Intern

Company Description: OUR NATIONAL CONVERSATION (ONC) aims to reduce partisanship and foster effective solutions to America’s challenges. Driven by America’s youth, ONC operates a media outlet, develops educational materials, and facilitates dialogue to improve the country.

Job Description: The Editorial Intern plays a crucial role in ONC’s mission by ensuring that all published content reflects nonpartisan news, opinions, and policy solutions. Reporting to the Editorial Team Lead and the Managing Editor, this intern will be part of the final review stage for a wide range of ONC materials, including books, policy proposals, solutions, op-eds, and newsletters.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Correcting grammatical and stylistic errors in all ONC written content.
  • Fact-checking content to maintain accuracy and prevent errors.
  • Collaborating with Policy Content Writers and other organizational teams.
  • Maintaining constant communication with the Editorial Team Lead and Managing Editor regarding project status and deadlines.
  • Potential opportunity to learn website backend operations for reviewing and approving external writer submissions.

A competency assessment, involving the editing of an article for grammatical and stylistic errors, will be part of the interview process.

This is a remote position, requiring comfort with coordination via Zoom and Slack and a high level of communication. Interns are expected to commit for at least a full semester, with opportunities to extend based on performance.

Compensation: This is an unpaid position.

Responsibilities:

  • Edit written content to maintain grammatical integrity for the ONC website and mobile app.
  • Ensure ONC’s commitment to nonpartisanship, ideological diversity, and civil debate is reflected in all published work.
  • Participate in civil dialogue with conservative, progressive, and moderate writers.
  • Work with script writers and core content writers to ensure consistency in all written materials.
  • Fact-check written content to prevent errors and maintain accuracy.

Qualifications:

  • Current student pursuing a degree in English or Literature, Political Science, Journalism, Communications, and/or related fields.
  • Exceptional writing skills (English) are required.
  • Proficient verbal communication/speaking skills are a plus.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Prior editing experience preferred, specifically with AP style.
  • Responsive, consistent, and effective communicator.
  • Ability to work remotely and manage their own schedule to meet deadlines.
  • Google Workspace experience preferred.
  • Ability to attend Organization-Wide meetings every other week.
  • Ability to attend weekly Editorial Team meetings.
  • Must be authorized to intern in the U.S.
