Junior Level Blast Research Engineer | Battelle

The Tone:
This is an early career position at Battelle, located on-site at Tyndall Air Force Base, near Panama City, FL, and is contingent upon contract award. Battelle conducts critical research and development, manages national laboratories, and delivers essential services for a diverse range of clients. This role is vital in supporting government programs focused on Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) efforts in Airfield Protection, Installation Resiliency, and Blast for the U.S. Air Force Civil Engineer Center. The work directly contributes to enhancing national security through advanced protective systems and infrastructure survivability.

• Mission: This person will conduct RDT&E efforts focused on airfield protection, installation resiliency, and blast effects for the U.S. Air Force.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Research & Development: Perform RDT&E of moderate complexity by compiling technical specifications, analyzing data, and developing solutions to identified problems.
• Test Design: Develop comprehensive test plans, experimentation protocols, and technology assessment studies, and conduct technical projects.
• Blast Analysis: Apply engineering research and analysis experience to understand explosive blast effects and mitigation techniques through modeling and testing.
• Experimentation Procedures: Design detailed experimentation procedures for evaluating test systems, including selecting instrumentation and planning data collection from field testing.
• Reporting & Presentation: Analyze and interpret collected data, then prepare formal and informal technical reports and presentations for clients.

The Must-Haves
• Background: A BS degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Structural, Civil, or similar) or equivalent, with a highly desired strong structural engineering background.
• Experience: 0-2 years of experience related to research and development programs.
• Skills: Experience with high-speed cameras, instrumentation, and data analysis techniques; excellent verbal and written communication; strong interpersonal skills.
• Bonus: Preferred understanding of explosive blast effects and blast mitigation; desirable experience with full-scale and reduced-scale modeling and testing; proactive, self-starting ability to work independently and collaboratively; a positive attitude; and the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.
