Networking Software Engineer (PhD Graduate) | ByteDance

The Tone:
This is a Full-time position at ByteDance. The Networking team is dedicated to creating and building hyperscale data-center networking solutions, integrating cutting-edge ideas from network architecture, Software Defined Networking (SDN), network virtualization, switch software, hardware co-design, and high-speed networking. These robust solutions are fundamental to powering globally popular applications like Douyin and TikTok, serving hundreds of millions of users daily. This role is essential for a PhD graduate to develop critical software control systems, advanced monitoring capabilities, and operational tools that ensure the safety, confidence, and high performance of ByteDance’s vast and complex networking infrastructure.

• Mission: Design, implement, and maintain the software systems that control and monitor ByteDance’s vast network infrastructure to ensure seamless operation for global applications.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Build: Develop software control systems specifically for managing network resources, with a focus on long-haul bandwidth optimization.
• Monitor: Create host and gateway end-side capabilities for comprehensive network traffic monitoring, analysis, and control.
• Collaborate: Partner with network operation and planning teams to meet the bandwidth and performance demands of upper-layer computing, storage, and recommendation businesses.
• Resolve: Provide essential fault analysis and resolution capabilities to support and maintain the health of critical business services.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Doctorate Degree. Early Career. A 2026 PhD graduate with a background in computer science, network engineering, or a related field.
• Experience: Proficiency in at least one programming language, such as Go, C++, or Python, with a strong foundation in designing and developing distributed systems. Candidates should also possess practical or research experience in the areas of bandwidth management or distributed rate limiting systems/algorithms.
• Skills: An in-depth understanding of networking protocols and the TCP/IP stack, including routing protocols.
• Bonus: Familiarity with Linux operating systems and networking functionalities is highly advantageous. Practical experience utilizing container techniques in emulating production networks to support network operations is also a plus.
