Research Associate Intern
POSITION SUMMARY:
TransMedics is at the forefront of transforming organ transplantation through its innovative Organ Care System (OCS), a platform designed to preserve and evaluate donor organs outside the human body. The Research team plays a crucial role by conducting high-impact translational studies that bridge foundational laboratory science with practical clinical application.
The Research Associate Intern will actively contribute to and gain hands-on experience supporting ongoing research initiatives centered around the Organ Care System (OCS). This internship offers valuable exposure to various facets of scientific inquiry, including experimental design, real-time data collection, and the broader field of translational science within a dynamic biomedical device environment.
This opportunity is particularly well-suited for students pursuing careers in medical research, biotechnology, healthcare innovation, or those planning to pursue graduate or medical education.
Responsibilities
Laboratory & System Operations
- Operate and troubleshoot the Organ Care System (OCS) under direct supervision.
- Assist with essential sample collection and experimental setup procedures.
- Support the meticulous execution of study protocols.
Data Collection & Analysis
- Participate actively in real-time data collection, accurate data entry, and comprehensive data compilation across various experimental studies.
- Assist with the organization and analysis of complex datasets.
- Support the interpretation of research results and the identification of significant scientific insights.
Research Design & Execution
- Learn fundamental principles of study design, including hypothesis development and meticulous experimental planning.
- Assist with the precise execution and thorough documentation of research protocols.
- Contribute meaningfully to high-impact research projects that possess direct clinical relevance.
Scientific Communication
- Prepare concise and informative summaries of research findings.
- Strengthen both written and verbal scientific communication skills through practical application.
- Deliver a formal presentation outlining summer research findings at the conclusion of the internship period.
Collaboration
- Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, engaging with research scientists, engineers, and clinical partners.
- Actively participate in research discussions and collaborative problem-solving sessions.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES
- Primarily a general office environment where a significant amount of time is spent at a desk, working on computers, and reviewing documents. This necessitates the ability to sit for extended periods.
- There may also be a need to stand for meetings or when moving around the office.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current undergraduate or graduate student actively pursuing a degree in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Pre-Med, or a closely related scientific field.
- Demonstrated strong interest in medical research, biotechnology, or healthcare innovation.
- Possession of strong analytical thinking abilities and meticulous attention to detail.
- Basic understanding of scientific principles and foundational data analysis concepts.
- Willingness to learn new laboratory techniques and operate specialized equipment under direct supervision.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work both independently and effectively within a collaborative team environment.
- Reliable, organized, and deeply committed to successfully completing assigned projects.
- Availability for in-person work throughout the entire duration of the internship.
