Deep Learning / Reinforcement Learning Summer Intern – Video & Image Understanding (VIU) Group

About the Opportunity

Join STR’s Video & Image Understanding (VIU) Group as a summer intern. This group is an integral part of STR’s Intelligence Division, which focuses on developing and applying state-of-the-art information processing techniques to produce robust, scalable solutions for intelligence analysts and military decision makers.

As an intern, you will have the unique opportunity to develop and apply cutting-edge deep learning or reinforcement learning techniques to solve challenging problems that have not been previously addressed by academic and industry research communities. Your work will span critical areas such as computer vision, situational awareness, and autonomous control, directly contributing to meaningful solutions for real-world problems that enhance our nation’s security.

Key Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively as part of a dedicated project team, benefiting from focused mentorship from experienced staff.
• Adapt, extend, and optimize innovative machine learning algorithms specifically tailored for solving complex computer vision or autonomy challenges.
• Actively collaborate with STR research engineers and academic researchers (who are often integrated into our teams) to develop practical and powerful machine learning and computer vision solutions.
• Gain valuable experience in evaluating and optimizing machine learning performance on highly relevant and practical data sets.

Required Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in an MS or PhD degree program in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related technical discipline.
• Possess a successful track record of applying machine learning algorithms, specifically including deep learning or reinforcement learning, to problems within computer vision or autonomy domains.
• Demonstrate a strong academic record and a genuine interest in research.
• Proficient experience in scientific software development, particularly with Python.
• This position requires the ability to obtain a security clearance, for which U.S. citizenship is a mandatory requirement by the U.S. Government.

Contextual Full-Time Salary Information

While this is an internship position, the full-time salary range for similar roles at STR is $89,000 – $112,000. Actual offers are based on various factors, including but not limited to, the candidate’s experience, education, training, key skills/critical skills, security clearances, and prevailing market and business conditions.
