Overview:
The College Financial Representative internship program at Northwestern Mutual offers a unique opportunity for students to gain guidance, connection, and a framework for building an integrated financial planning practice from the ground up. Interns from diverse academic backgrounds and experiences will begin to construct a financial planning practice while engaging with local and nationwide experts, exclusive financial products, and the robust support of a Fortune 500 company. This program is designed to help you build confidence, develop a professional network, and empower individuals to achieve financial freedom. At Northwestern Mutual, hard work pays off!
Responsibilities:
Our internship program closely mimics the full-time Financial Representative career, providing a comprehensive learning experience:
- Learn how to prospect and network to build your business and client base.
- Develop and execute on a strategic business strategy.
- Call on potential clients and set meetings to understand their financial goals.
- Prepare financial plans and offer useful, tailored recommendations.
- Gain exposure to proprietary planning software platforms.
- Engage in weekly coaching, training, and development meetings.
- Receive support to obtain Risk Product State Licensing: Life, Accident, and Health.
- Build valuable life skills that create future career opportunities.
Program Structure & Growth Opportunities:
As a Northwestern Mutual College Financial Representative, you can expect a flexible schedule designed to accommodate your life and academic commitments. With the option to participate in our internship program year-round, you can continuously grow your practice and receive support for additional registrations and certifications such as the Series 6 & 63 or CFP®. Interns are inspired at local and national recognition events, gain access to leadership programs, and collaborate with industry experts. Our culture provides diverse resources to ensure both personal and professional growth throughout the program. Eligible students demonstrating interest will have the opportunity to interview for a full-time Financial Representative or Advisor role upon graduation.
Qualifications:

- Full-time student; juniors and seniors preferred.
- Entrepreneurial ambitions and a genuine curiosity for sales.
- Highly involved on campus (e.g., leader, athlete, campus organizations, student government).
- Excellent time-management skills.
- Interest in financial literacy and planning tools.
- Business savvy and a desire to increase critical thinking abilities.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Performance-based earnings and revenue.
- Learning and Development Incentives (up to $1000/month, not inclusive of earned commissions).
