Job Title: NetherRealm Software Engineering Intern Co-op (Chicago)

Duration: June – December 2026 (6-month co-op program)

Location: Chicago area. The selected co-op will be expected to join us in the office on a regular cadence based on the manager’s in-office schedule (hybrid capacity).

Your New Role

As a Software Engineering Co-op at NetherRealm Studios, a division of WB Games Inc., you will join the engineering team responsible for the Mortal Kombat and Injustice Franchises. This role offers an opportunity to explore a wide range of real-world programming tasks while contributing to the development of a AAA-quality Console game.

Your Role Accountabilities

  • Contribute to the development of a AAA-quality Console game.
  • Work with a team of talented industry veterans on tasks ranging from creating tools to improve productivity to helping with the implementation of gameplay features.
  • Take part in implementing solutions to programming challenges within a collaborative team environment.
  • Work closely with Gameplay team members, art, design, and quality assurance to implement game features, debug tools, automated tests, and fix bugs.
  • Gain exposure to real-world programming challenges and contribute to their solutions.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Excellent C/C++ programming skills, with a good understanding of the language and an appreciation for object-oriented architecture.
  • Experience with the Microsoft Visual C++ development environment.
  • A passion for video game technology and gameplay mechanics.
  • Ability to collaborate with engineers and content creators to develop robust and fun gameplay.
  • Creative, results-oriented, self-motivated, and a resourceful problem-solver.
  • Ability to work well in a team development environment with strong communication skills.
  • Strong desire to build industry-leading game systems.
  • Familiarity with the Unreal Engine 4 is a plus (Not Required).
  • Must be actively enrolled in an accredited college or university degree program for the full duration of the internship (proof of enrollment required).
  • Must be a rising Junior or Senior or Master’s student (18 years or older).
  • Must be in academic good standing (3.0 or above GPA). A transcript will be required to verify your GPA if an offer is extended.
  • Warner Bros. Discovery will only consider candidates who are presently authorized to work for any employer in the United States and who will not require work visa sponsorship from Warner Bros. Discovery now or in the future. Candidates currently on any student or exchange visa, including F-1 CPT, F-1 OPT, J-1, M-1, etc., will not be eligible for the internship program.

What To Know Before Applying

  • The duration of the Summer 2026 co-op program is 6 months from June to December, dependent on the student’s availability based on the semester schedule.
  • Co-ops will be expected to work 35-40 hours per week in a hybrid capacity for the full duration of the program.
  • Our internships are paid opportunities with a competitive hourly wage.
  • Credit is not required; however, we will provide the necessary documentation for school credit if desired.
  • Relocation is not provided.
  • A WBD team member will contact you if your experiences and interests match an open internship position. Due to the high volume of applications, we are unable to give individual status updates.

Compensation:

  • Pay Rate: $31 per hour USD for undergrad interns.
  • Pay Rate: $35 per hour USD for graduate interns.

Important Note on Future Employment (Post-2026 Separation):

On June 9, 2025, Warner Bros. Discovery announced plans to separate into two publicly traded companies, Warner Bros. and Discovery Global, with an expected completion in mid-2026. Although you will be hired by Warner Bros. Discovery, upon the planned separation in 2026, your employment likely will transition to Warner Bros. Company or Discovery Global. This period offers an exciting opportunity to lay the foundation at one of the world’s premier entertainment brands.
