Job Title: Graduate Nurse Internship – Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU) RN
Job Summary:
This is a comprehensive 6-month internship program designed to prepare new Graduate Nurses for a Registered Nurse (RN) position within the specialized Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU) at Michigan Medicine. The program offers a blend of intensive classroom instruction and hands-on, precepted clinical experience. A commitment of two years, with a minimum of 36 hours per week in the PCTU, is required upon successful completion of the internship. Shift assignments post-internship will be Nights, encompassing both 8 and 12-hour shifts.
Start Date: This position has a fixed start date of March 12, 2026.

About the Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU):
The PCTU is a sophisticated 20-bed tertiary care center, serving patients from state, regional, national, and international referrals. It specializes in the medical and surgical care of infants, children, adolescents, and adults presenting with congenital and acquired heart disease. The unit is committed to providing exemplary nursing care, embracing a philosophy of family-centered care that empowers families to actively participate in the decision-making and care of their children.
Responsibilities of the PCTU Nurse:
PCTU Nurses operate in a technologically advanced and high-intensity environment, providing care for high-acuity patients whose status can change rapidly. Key responsibilities include:
- Providing care in an environment utilizing advanced technologies such as ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), CRRT (Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy), and VAD’s (Ventricular Assist Devices).
- Performing complex physiological patient assessments.
- Caring for patients undergoing the most progressive surgical and catheterization interventions.
- Practicing in close partnership with cardiologists, cardiothoracic surgeons, and fellows.
- Offering individual support and education to families and patients throughout their intensive care unit admission.

- Hourly Range for Registered Nurses: $41.78 – $64.81 per hour
- Shift Differentials:
- Evening Shift: $3.00 / hour
- Night Shift: $4.00 / hour
- Day Shift Weekend: $2.90 / hour
- Evening Shift Weekend: $5.90 / hour
- Night Shift Weekend: $6.90 / hour
- Charge Nurse: $1.00 / hour

- Nursing Framework Level: This UMPNC RN posting is at Nursing Framework LEVEL C. Actual Nursing Framework Level and salary will be determined at the time of hire (levels range from A to F).
Required Qualifications*:
Candidates must meet the following qualifications to be considered for an interview:
- Ability to start on March 12, 2026.
- Must be a Graduate Nurse or a Newly Licensed RN who has not previously practiced as an RN.
- Successful completion of an accredited BSN program.
- Successful completion of the NCLEX must occur no later than 45 days from the individual start date.
- PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification is required (or within six (6) months of date of hire) or MUST be completed prior to the end of the probationary period.
- A complete and accurate resume must be attached for full consideration.
Desired Qualifications*:
The ideal candidate will also possess:
- Student nurse clinical experience in a Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU).
- Experience as an extern or ICU technician in a PCTU.
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills.
- Highly motivated and organized.
- Demonstrated leadership abilities.
- Takes initiative in seeking professional growth.
- Demonstrates expertise in communication and problem-solving skills (evidenced by interviews, documentation, writing skills, and references).
- Overall GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Work Schedule:
- Hours per Week: 36
- Shift/Hours/Days: Night shift, consisting of 8 and 12-hour shifts; Monday through Friday with rotating weekends.
- Location: Mott Children’s Hospital – Pediatric Cardio-Thoracic Unit (PCTU).
- Note: All new employees are expected to float to designated unit(s) during times of low census.
