Job Description

This is an internship position for an Area Design Intern, part of Obsidian’s Obsidian University Internship Program. The intern will contribute to the development of the company’s next great roleplaying game by designing area layouts and implementing gameplay mechanics. This is a learning-focused role where the intern will work alongside experienced developers and other RPG enthusiasts.

Key Responsibilities:

• Create and iterate on area and level layouts using Unreal Engine.
• Implement gameplay mechanics for various aspects of the game, including combat encounters, NPC conversations, and quest scripting.

Collaboration:
The intern will work closely with:

• Area Designers
• Environment Artists
• Narrative Designers
• Game System Designers

Required Qualifications:

• Experience with Unreal Engine.
• Familiarity with conveying layouts and experiential design goals through various means such as documentation, top-downs, and editor blockouts.
• Excellent communication skills, particularly the ability to articulate design goals and concepts across different disciplines.
• Familiarity with the role-playing games genre, with a specific emphasis on recent AAA role-playing games.

Desired Qualifications (Pluses):

• A background in programming and/or scripting languages.
• Experience with pen-and-paper role-playing games.
• Experience in writing branching narratives.
• A background in environment art, which may include modeling, texturing, and/or lighting.
• A strong passion for gaming and specifically for the games developed by Obsidian Entertainment.
