Operations Internship – Lumber Yard

Internship Overview:

As an Operations Intern, you will be an essential part of the yard and warehouse team, contributing to critical components that ensure efficient operations. This includes assisting with inventory management, logistics coordination, order fulfillment, and safety procedures. Interns will gain a crucial behind-the-scenes understanding of the entire material movement process, from supplier to customer, and how yard operations integrate with broader company goals.

Internship Details:

Duration: 12 weeks
Start Date (Target): May 18, 2026 (flexible depending on school schedule)
Schedule: Full-time (40 hours/week)
Location: A Lumber Yard or Distribution Facility within the New England area, with the primary job location being Newton, MA.
Work Environment: This is an in-person, physical setting within a warehouse/lumber yard.
Sponsorship: Builders FirstSource cannot provide sponsorship for this role.

Key Responsibilities (Other Duties May Be Assigned):

• Support daily yard and warehouse operations, encompassing receiving, staging, and dispatching building materials.
• Assist with inventory tracking, cycle counts, and restocking to maintain accurate stock levels.
Shadow operations leaders to gain insights into scheduling, staffing, and production planning activities.
• Contribute to customer order fulfillment, ensuring accuracy and timeliness in product delivery.
• Learn and rigorously apply safety standards in material handling, forklift operations, and yard organization.
• Actively contribute to process improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing efficiency and reducing waste.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as sales, transportation, and manufacturing to understand end-to-end operations.
• Participate in team meetings and report on project findings or operational challenges.
• Operate handheld scanners, data entry systems, and inventory tracking software (comprehensive training will be provided).
• Observe and assist with customer service interactions and order issue resolution.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This internship does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

To successfully perform this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

Education: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain, Operations Management, or a related field.
Interest: Possess a strong interest in warehouse operations, logistics, or the construction supply industry.
Work Environment: Willingness to work in an outdoor/warehouse environment with exposure to varying weather conditions and physical tasks.
Skills: Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
Attributes: Must be self-motivated, reliable, and eager to learn.
Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally and stand/walk for extended periods.
Preferred: Junior or Senior standing with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
