Job Description

Overall College Programs Purpose:
Southwire’s College Programs are designed to provide valuable experience to students pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher, offering meaningful, project-based work that builds on their academic learning. The overarching goal is to help early career professionals bridge formal learning with productive work, facilitating their transition from school to a professional environment. Participants receive “real-world” applications of their academic studies, helpful feedback and coaching, and are considered for employment after graduation.

Program Structure & Experience:
• Intern assignments typically last 10-12 weeks, while co-op assignments are generally 16-18 weeks.
• All new interns and co-ops must begin in the summer rotation (May 18th – Aug 7th).
• Each student receives an assigned project at the beginning of the term and is responsible for developing a timeline, providing progress updates, and delivering a final presentation at a senior leadership expo.
• Participants will collaborate on other projects and work with talented peers and inspirational leaders, many of whom started as interns or co-ops.
• The program offers a robust developmental experience through immersive onboarding and offboarding, an assigned mentor, networking opportunities, organized events, activities, and community service/volunteer initiatives.
• Students have the opportunity to impact the future of the organization and are exposed to a world-class program community.
Rising senior interns and co-ops are considered for full-time employment opportunities upon graduation.
• The pay rate for these programs ranges from $18.00 – $23.00 per hour.
• The location for this opportunity is SCUPP.

Specific Role: Health and Safety Intern

Position Summary:
This position focuses on supporting the Health and Safety team by assisting with programs and initiatives crucial for ensuring a safe and compliant work environment. The Health and Safety Intern will play a key role in supporting workplace safety initiatives by analyzing trends, conducting compliance audits, and developing actionable improvement plans. This internship offers hands-on experience in safety culture development, risk assessment, and engineering controls. The role emphasizes influencing safe behaviors, improving safety standards, and collaborating across departments to drive change.

Key Responsibilities:
• Assist in conducting safety audits and inspections within facilities.
• Support the development and delivery of safety training materials and programs.
• Participate in Kaizen events and hazard identification activities.
• Collect, analyze, and report safety data and incident trends.
• Help maintain safety documentation and compliance records.
• Research and recommend best practices to enhance workplace safety culture.
• Assist with safety communications and awareness campaigns.
• Collaborate with team members on safety improvement projects and initiatives.
• Perform other safety-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
Minimum 2.5 GPA.
• Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college/university pursuing a degree in Environmental Health and Safety or Industrial Engineering.
• Reliable transportation to and from work.
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
Strong organization, planning, and analytical skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) or other relevant tools.
