Job Description: Data Scientist Intern at Microsoft
This internship opportunity at Microsoft allows interns to bring their aspirations, talent, potential, and excitement to contribute to the company’s mission.
Role Summary: As a Data Scientist Intern, you will be involved in using machine learning, statistics, experiments, and/or AI (including LLM, SLM, and agents) to build and improve Microsoft’s products and drive business impact. You will collaborate with stakeholders, formulate problem-solving approaches, and apply algorithms and data sources within the context of business and engineering needs. The role also involves combining engineering abilities with analytical skills to enhance customer experiences. Data Scientists at Microsoft utilize innovative methods, algorithms, and tools daily to deliver results across Microsoft devices, operating systems, products, and services, and to provide novel insights into business and customer scenarios.
Location: This application is specifically for internships based in Microsoft’s Redmond, Washington office. For internships in other US locations, candidates are directed to the Microsoft Careers site (http://www.microsoft.com/university).
Responsibilities:
• Problem Solving: Formulate approaches to solve problems using well-defined algorithms and data sources.
• Contextual Understanding: Incorporate an understanding of product functionality and customer perspective to provide context for identified problems.
• Data Exploration: Use data exploration techniques to discover new questions or opportunities within your problem area, and propose the applicability and limitations of the data.
• Analysis and Iteration: Interpret the results of analysis, validate the approach, and learn to monitor, analyze, and iterate to continuously improve.
• Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with peer stakeholders to produce clear, compelling, actionable insights that influence product and service improvements, ultimately impacting millions of customers.
• Continuous Improvement: Participate in the peer review process, act on feedback, and learn innovative methods, algorithms, and tools to increase the impact and applicability of your results.
Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
• Education Status: Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Academic Term Remaining: Must have at least one additional quarter/semester of school remaining following the completion of the internship.
• Enrollment: Candidate must be enrolled in a full-time bachelor’s, master’s, MBA, or PhD program in an area relevant for the role during the academic term immediately before their internship.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Advanced Degree: Currently pursuing a Master’s Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Data Engineering Experience: Some engineering experience and/or project coursework using large data systems on SQL, Hadoop, etc.
• Programming Proficiency: Proficiency using one or more programming or scripting languages to work with data, such as Python, Perl, or C#.
• Data Analysis & Statistics Tools: Some experience and/or project coursework performing data analysis and applying statistics, working with tools such as Excel, R, MATLAB, AMPL, or SAS.
• Telemetry Systems: Some experience and/or project coursework with product and service telemetry systems.
• A/B Testing/Experimentation: Some A/B Testing or experimentation experience (this can include conducting real-life science experiments, hypothesis testing in statistics, etc.).
• Machine Learning Application: Some experience or coursework applying basic machine learning to a type of data and/or using algorithms to conduct experiments on data.
Compensation:
• Base Pay Range (Redmond): USD $5610.00 – $11010.00 per month.
• Base Pay Range (San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area): USD $7270.00 – $12030.00 per month.
