Job Description: Wastewater Treatment Intern (Temporary)
This is a temporary internship position located at the Wastewater Plant in Sugar Land.
Summary of Position:
The primary purpose of this internship is to provide comprehensive training and hands-on experience in water and wastewater treatment. This experience is essential for the intern to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to eventually become a State licensed/certified operator or mechanic.
Key Responsibilities and Activities:
The selected individual will gain practical experience by working alongside either an advanced operator or an advanced mechanic.
• Working with an Advanced Operator: The intern will learn to read, interpret, and adjust meters and gauges to ensure proper functioning of plant equipment and processes. This also includes controlling chemical-feeding devices, taking water samples, and performing chemical and biological laboratory analyses.
• Working with an Advanced Mechanic: Alternatively, the intern may work alongside an advanced mechanic, learning to read and interpret manuals and drawings for maintaining plant equipment and machinery according to manufacturer’s specifications. This role involves troubleshooting equipment and making minor repairs using hand tools and portable power tools.
Across both paths, the intern will become familiar with a variety of instruments, equipment, and tools used to monitor and control processes, as well as perform general maintenance activities at the treatment plant.
Upon successful completion of the program, this internship will provide the individual with a solid foundation based on training and hands-on experience in the water or wastewater field. Interns will be actively encouraged to apply for available positions within the BRA.
Preferred/Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Basic knowledge of math, biology, chemistry, physics, and/or mechanics is necessary for success.
• Ability to successfully complete assessments.
• Knowledge and use of computers and programs such as Word and Excel.
Preferred/Required Education and Acceptable Experience and Training:
• High school seniors or above with strong math, science, or mechanical skills are encouraged to apply.
Work Schedule:
This position requires 15 to 20 hours of work per week.
Certificates and Licenses Required:
• For individuals over the age of 18, a current Texas driver’s license and a good driving record are required for travel to other locations as needed.
• The individual will be required to test for the Class D license at the end of the internship and upon successful high school graduation.
• All necessary training and examination fees will be paid for by the BRA.
Starting Salary:
The starting pay for this position is $15.00 per hour.
