Job Description (Veterinary Technician Student Externship Program)

This is an unpaid externship designed for veterinary technician students to gain comprehensive hands-on experience in emergency medicine. Participants will work closely alongside VEG’s credentialed, emergency veterinary technicians.

The externship’s primary focus is on honing essential emergency skills, which include:
• Obtaining patient vitals
• Processing laboratory samples
• Caring for hospitalized patients
• Triaging emerging cases
• Collaborating effectively in a fast-paced environment

Flexibility: Students can choose the length of their externship to meet their school’s specific requirements.
Location Choice: Students can select their preferred externship location, subject to hospital bandwidth.
Dedicated Mentorship: Each extern will receive support and guidance from a credentialed veterinary technician.
Full Immersion: The program offers a complete immersion into the realities of emergency medicine.

Requirements for Applicants:
• Must be currently enrolled in an AVMA accredited veterinary technology or veterinary nursing program (or one actively seeking accreditation).
• Must be in a class that requires externship hours and/or skills.
This program is specifically for veterinary technology or veterinary nursing students only, not for veterinary students or veterinary assistant students.
• The externship must be scheduled to begin within 6 months of the application date.
Rabies vaccinations are required, unless the applicant’s school’s rabies mitigation policy permits unvaccinated students to handle unvaccinated animals.
