Veterinary Extern – General Practice | NVA General Practice

The Tone:
This is an externship at NVA General Practice, located at Chickasaw Trail Animal Hospital. NVA General Practice operates a network of unique veterinary hospitals, each committed to excellent medicine and providing exceptional service to animals and the people who love them. This externship offers students a foundational understanding of the day-to-day operations within a general practice setting, allowing them to develop critical hands-on clinical experience. The role is vital for preparing future veterinarians by immersing them in a supportive clinical environment and fostering practical skills essential for a successful career.

The TL;DR

• Type: Temporary (ranging from two to eight weeks)
• Location: In-person, Chickasaw Trail Animal Hospital

• Team: Works closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians.
• Mission: To provide veterinary students with unique opportunities to gain practical clinical skills and understand the day-to-day operations and medical management within a general practice environment.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Patient Assessment: Actively engage in gathering comprehensive patient histories and performing thorough physical examinations, learning to elicit crucial information for accurate diagnosis and initial patient assessment.
• Treatment Planning & Management: Collaborate closely with supervising Associate Veterinarians on the creation of effective and tailored treatment plans and contribute to the ongoing medical management of patients.
• Clinical Procedures: Gain practical experience in a range of diagnostic procedures, observe and assist in dentistry services, and participate in surgical procedures by observing, assisting, or performing tasks under direct veterinary supervision.
• Professional Communication: Hone essential communication skills through regular interaction with the medical team, support staff, and clients, ensuring clear and empathetic service delivery within a supportive clinical environment.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Currently enrolled as a veterinary student, regardless of class year, with foundational knowledge in veterinary medicine principles.
• Experience: No prior externship experience is required; this role is specifically designed to provide students with the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on clinical experience.
• Skills: Clinical examination, patient history gathering, treatment planning, surgical assistance, diagnostic interpretation, patient medical management, and effective communication.
• Bonus: Eligibility for a travel/living expense stipend is offered to veterinary students who are currently in the clinical portion of their education.
