About the NVA Externship Experience:

The NVA Externship Program offers a unique opportunity for veterinary students to immerse themselves in the day-to-day operations of a veterinary practice. While each NVA hospital boasts its own distinct character, all share a fundamental commitment to fostering a supportive environment, upholding excellent medicine, and delivering exceptional service to beloved animals and their devoted owners.

This externship is designed to provide invaluable hands-on clinical experience, preparing students for the realities of a professional veterinary career.

Key Responsibilities & Learning Opportunities:

As an extern, you will work directly with supervising Associate Veterinarians to:

  • Gain proficiency in gathering comprehensive patient histories.
  • Practice and refine skills in performing thorough physical exams.
  • Assist in the creation of effective treatment plans.
  • Participate in various diagnostic procedures.
  • Observe and assist with dentistry services.
  • Engage in observing, assisting, or performing surgical procedures.
  • Develop expertise in the medical management of patients.
  • Enhance crucial communication skills with the medical team, support staff, and clients.

Program Duration:

Externship experiences typically range from two to eight weeks, with flexibility based on student availability and hospital scheduling.

Qualifications:

  • Designed specifically for 3rd and 4th year veterinary students.

Stipend & Benefits:

Veterinary students who are in the clinical portion of their education are eligible for a travel/living expense stipend.
