Utility Worker I | Inside Higher Ed
The Tone:
This is an in-person role within the Department of Sustainability Initiatives at Georgia State University, located in Atlanta, GA. Georgia State University’s Sustainability Initiatives department acts as a central hub, collaborating with partners across campus and beyond, to develop and communicate innovative solutions for critical global challenges. The department serves as a catalyst for integrating a culture of sustainability throughout the university, achieved by enhancing living-learning laboratory opportunities, exploring methods to reduce resource consumption and costs, and empowering students to become future leaders in sustainability. This Utility Worker I position is crucial for promoting sustainability efforts by ensuring the efficient operation of the Recycling Center and providing essential support for campus-wide events and logistics.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Event Support: Assist in setting up and participating in campus sustainability events such as Earth Week, Recyclemania, Move-in, and Move-Out.
• Recycling Collection: Drive university vehicles and walk buildings to collect recycling from assigned loading docks and buildings, including operating a compactor truck for cardboard.
• Material Processing: Operate a vertical baler and forklift to bale and store paper and plastic film, and a paper shredder to shred confidential documents.
• Center Maintenance: Remove recyclables from the truck and sort them at the Recycling Center, playing a key role in keeping this area clean, safe, and functional.
• Off-Campus Transport: Drive university vehicles to haul materials to designated off-campus locations as needed.
The Must-Haves
• Background: High school diploma or GED, with foundational knowledge of safe vehicle operation and general recycling procedures.
• Experience: A valid Georgia driver’s license is required, and the role involves assisting with special projects and driving university vehicles on and off campus.
• Skills: Safe operation of work vehicles including compactor trucks, forklifts, and paper shredders; specialized knowledge of recycling processes; maintaining a safe, functional, and operational Recycling Center; excellent customer service and collaborative working relationships.
• Bonus: A CDL license or prior driving experience, forklift certification, and experience in recycling, building services, janitorial work, trash collection, or grounds maintenance are all preferred.
