Job Description: Undergraduate Research Internship in Quantum Information Science
LLNL is seeking undergraduate students to join their Livermore Center for Quantum Science (LCQS) for a three-month summer internship program. This program offers practical research experience in various aspects of quantum information science, including:
• Quantum Algorithms
• Superconducting Qubits
• Quantum Sensing
• Ion Trap Design and Testing
• Noise Characterization
This internship will allow you to work alongside leading scientists at LLNL, gaining valuable hands-on experience and contributing to real-world research projects. You will have the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge technologies and explore various areas of quantum science.
Specific Responsibilities:
• Learn research methodologies: Gain insight into the process of conducting research in quantum computing and/or quantum sensing using experimental, theoretical, and computational tools.
• Collaborate with scientists: Interact with and learn from LLNL scientists actively working in quantum information science.
• Analyze data: Gather and analyze data relevant to your assigned research area, contributing to the advancement of your education.
• Hands-on experience: Utilize various simulation, data analysis, or experimental techniques under close supervision to gain practical experience.
• Present your work: Share your findings through presentations and/or poster sessions, demonstrating your research skills.
• Other duties as assigned: Contribute to the overall research effort by assisting with other tasks as needed.
Eligibility:
• Must be a continuing undergraduate student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing a degree in Physics, Engineering, or a related field.
• Demonstrate the ability to apply basic physics principles to solve technical problems.
• Possess strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Experience working with personal computers and familiarity with software like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
• GPA of 3.0 or above
• Experience with basic programming (e.g., Python, Labview)
• Previous experience working in an experimental laboratory environment or on a research project
Program Details:
• Duration: Three months, typically from May to September, with the possibility of extension.
• Location: Hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence.
