Job Description: Undergrad Intern – Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Department
This internship is located in El Segundo, CA and will operate on a hybrid work model (partially remote, partially on-site). The intern will support the Data Science and Artificial Intelligence Department (DSAID) within the Information Systems and Cyber Division (ISCD). ISCD leverages advanced information system technologies and cybersecurity expertise to deliver high-performance software systems. DSAID focuses on researching, prototyping, and building AI and data-enabled tools for national security and civil/commercial space applications.
Responsibilities:
The intern will contribute to data science and AI projects related to satellite-based environment remote sensing, with a specific focus on wildfire early detection and mitigation. Key responsibilities include:
• Data Processing Pipeline Evaluation: Evaluating technologies for use in processing satellite remote sensing data and implementing deep learning models for wildfire early detection.
• Ancillary Data Evaluation: Assessing additional data (e.g., weather patterns) relevant to wildfire prediction.
• Data Preprocessing and Labeling: Preparing and labeling data for model training.
• Model Training and Execution: Training and running segmentation models for wildfire detection.
• Algorithm Evaluation: Evaluating the performance of wildfire boundary prediction algorithms.
• Results Presentation: Communicating findings to team members and stakeholders through written reports and presentations.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
• Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Meteorology, Physics, Geology, Mathematics, or a related field from an accredited institution.
• Minimum 3.0 GPA.
• Availability to work full-time for at least 10 weeks outside of university term, with the ability to return to studies afterward.
• Software development skills, including familiarity with Python, Pandas, PyTorch, and computer vision libraries.
• Understanding of software engineering concepts (DevOps, algorithms, data structures).
• Experience with and understanding of machine learning and statistics.
• Working knowledge of Unix/Linux operating systems.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• U.S. citizenship (required for security clearance).
Preferred Skills & Qualifications:
• 3.5 GPA or higher.
• Active security clearance.
• Strong leadership skills.
• Experience with cloud-native application development or cloud infrastructure.
• Experience with data platform development.
• Experience with data security and governance technologies.
• Experience with microservice architectures.
• Experience with distributed and stream data processing.
• Proficiency in programming languages beyond Python (e.g., JavaScript, C/C++, C#, etc.).
Compensation: The hourly pay range is $26.00 – $30.00. Benefits are available and will be detailed during the interview process. Temporary housing assistance is not provided.
