Job Description: Tax Intern – State & Local Tax Practice

KPMG is seeking a Tax Intern to join their State & Local Tax practice. The role involves assisting internal team members with various tax-related tasks, focusing on state and local tax matters for businesses.

Responsibilities:

Tax Planning: Assist in tax planning for businesses, identifying and developing tax savings opportunities (income/franchise, sales/use taxes) resulting from legal entity changes. Design plans to help businesses address their state and local tax matters.
Transaction Analysis: Analyze the state and local tax implications of transactions like mergers and acquisitions. Assist clients in identifying and negotiating business incentives and available credits.
Legislative Monitoring: Stay updated on state legislative, judicial, and administrative developments impacting state and local taxes.
Multi-State Compliance: Support multi-state companies with state and local tax issues, including compliance, advisory services, planning, and controversy resolution.
Tax Return Preparation: Assist with tax issues related to income and franchise taxes, sales, use, and property taxes. Help prepare and/or review state income tax estimated payments, extensions, and tax returns.
Notice Resolution: Assist in addressing notices from state tax authorities. Conduct research and draft technical memoranda regarding compliance issues.
Technology Utilization: Develop skills in key technologies used in client service delivery, including artificial intelligence (AI), Alteryx, and Power BI.

Qualifications:

Education: Must be enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a JD or LLM in Taxation, or an equivalent program. Upon internship completion, additional academic credits must be needed before degree attainment and/or CPA eligibility.
GPA: Preferred GPA of 3.0 or above.
Skills: Strong tax research skills, demonstrated quality service mindset, strong technical aptitude, critical thinking skills, proficiency in MS Office applications (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook), excellent communication, time management, and leadership skills. Must be a flexible and adaptable team player, resourceful in delivering high-quality work. Ability to learn and utilize technologies like AI, Alteryx, and Power BI.
Location & Travel: Must reside within a commutable distance to the office and be able to travel to client premises as needed, sometimes with short notice. Must have own transportation.
