Tax & Audit Intern | Ascend

The Tone:
This is an internship at GMP, a public accounting firm that operates under the Ascend platform. Ascend is building a dynamic platform for regional accounting firms, enabling them to stay independent while accessing the resources typically available to a Top 25 firm. This role offers a genuine introduction to the world of public accounting, moving beyond basic administrative tasks to provide real-world experience. Interns will gain a firsthand look at how a high-performing accounting firm serves its clients as trusted advisors, working alongside staff at every level, up to partners. A dedicated Team Leader will support the intern from day one, helping to build a strong practical foundation and bridging the gap between classroom and career, ensuring they leave with valuable training and knowledge.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Prepare: Assist in the preparation of individual and business income tax returns, including direct interaction with client personnel.
• Process: Make adjusting entries and complete trial balances in support of tax return preparation.
• Support: Assist with general ledger work and financial statement preparation, and support the preparation of payroll returns and related forms.
• Contribute: Participate in special projects such as tax projections, consulting engagements, and tech-forward initiatives.
• Utilize: Work with the firm’s technology stack, including AI-powered tools, to perform tasks efficiently and accurately.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Candidates must currently be pursuing a degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field. Required coursework in accounting provides a foundational understanding for the responsibilities of this role.
• Experience: Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications is required, with a strong emphasis on Excel for various financial tasks. Candidates should be comfortable learning and applying new technologies, including AI tools, with confidence in their ability to adapt and utilize them effectively.
• Skills: This role requires clear communication, demonstrating genuine motivation and curiosity when interacting with colleagues and clients. Individuals must take accountability for their work and be capable of thriving within a collaborative team environment.
• Bonus: A strong interest or curiosity in artificial intelligence is beneficial, along with a genuine interest in understanding current events and trends in the broader business world, extending beyond academic studies.
