Job Description (Detailed)
This role is for a Surgical Technology Student who participates in the care of surgical patients.
Primary Function/General Purpose Of Position:
The surgical technology student works under the direction of a Registered Nurse and is supervised by a Surgical Technologist. The core function is to attend to the patient’s direct care needs in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of Bon Secours Mercy Health.
Essential Job Functions:
The responsibilities of the Surgical Technology Student include, but are not limited to:
• Functioning as the scrub person and assisting as trained during operative and other invasive procedures.
• Assembling supplies and equipment required for procedures.
• Preparing and organizing sterile supplies and instruments for procedures.
• Performing surgical counts with the circulating RN according to policy.
• Maintaining an organized sterile field and ensuring its sterility by taking corrective action as needed.
• Assisting with the placement of sterile drapes.
• Providing instruments and supplies to the surgical team during procedures while maintaining aseptic technique.
• Retrieving and passing off specimens, ensuring they are labeled appropriately and correctly.
• Reporting any implanted devices, catheters, drains, and packing to the circulator.
• Providing complete case preparation and demonstrating knowledge, with the ability to adapt, regarding special instruments, supplies, and equipment needs for various patient populations.
• Demonstrating knowledge of patients’ rights and responsibilities according to the patient’s age and understanding.
• Demonstrating understanding of patients’ Advance Directives.
• Assisting in CPR as needed.
• Assisting with pre and post-procedure cleaning of the operative or invasive procedure room and necessary instruments.
• Practicing and delivering care in accordance with the core concepts and intention of the BSMH policy.
• Participating in ongoing educational and competency verification opportunities.
• Participating in financial accountability by utilizing resources in a cost-conscious manner and offering performance improvement initiatives.
• Participating in all patient safety care measures.
• Being accessible for “on call” as scheduled and available within department-indicated time frames.
• Demonstrating flexibility regarding unit/area staffing and scheduling needs.
• Maintaining personal grooming and attire consistent with BSMH policy.
Qualifications:
• Licensing/Certification:
• BLS Basic Life Support – American Heart Association (required)
• Education:
• High School Diploma or GED (required)
• Completion of the first semester of clinical rotation in an accredited surgical technologist program (required)
• Work Experience:
• One year of perioperative, operating room, or related military surgical technology experience (preferred)
• Training: None specified.
