Summer IT Network Communications Intern | The City of Chesapeake

The Tone:
This is an internship at The City of Chesapeake, located in Chesapeake, VA. The City of Chesapeake provides essential services to its community through a municipal government environment. This role is crucial for supporting the underlying network infrastructure, telecommunications systems, and overall IT operations that enable these critical City services. Through this internship, students will gain hands-on experience and contribute to the effective functioning of local government technology.

• Team: IT Network Communications Team
• Mission: To assist the IT Network Communications Team with technical and operational tasks related to network infrastructure and telecommunications, thereby gaining exposure to enterprise technologies supporting critical City services.
• Tech Stack: VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), network segmentation, Network Address Translation (NAT), firewall security, infrastructure services, network monitoring tools, Layer 2 switching, Layer 3 switching, Layer 3 routing, enterprise network protocols, enterprise network hardware.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Inventory Management: Maintain and update hardware inventory records.
• Infrastructure Organization: Organize and clean IT equipment closets, supporting patch panel cable management, labeling, and cleanup.
• Equipment Deployment: Assist with the removal and installation of network equipment, and support phone system upgrades, equipment staging, and deployments across City departments.
• Project Support: Provide assistance with IT and network infrastructure projects and support infrastructure monitoring activities under staff guidance.
• Documentation & Diagrams: Help document network environments and create network diagrams.

• Background: Current student pursuing a degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Network Administration, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
• Experience: Basic knowledge of computer hardware and networking concepts.
• Skills: Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Bonus: An interest in networking, telecommunications, or IT infrastructure.
