Summer Internship Program – Engineering Track, Structure, and Services

This paid internship program offers ambitious students the chance to gain real-world experience in the field of engineering. Interns will work alongside experienced professionals on projects focused on maintaining and improving BNSF’s extensive railway infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities:

Infrastructure Maintenance: Inspect, maintain, repair, and construct track infrastructure, including rails, ties, and ballast, to uphold BNSF’s safety standards.
Project Planning: Plan and schedule required maintenance and repairs, ensuring quality control.
Infrastructure Expansion: Contribute to the expansion and update of BNSF’s infrastructure by participating in projects that involve terminal and hub expansions, facility upgrades, structure repair and replacement, and overseeing public projects and utility crossings.
Safety: Prioritize safety for themselves and their team members.
Project Management: Manage project finances, schedules, and communication with stakeholders.
Shadowing Opportunities: Gain valuable hands-on experience by shadowing experienced professionals in roles such as Supervisor Engineering Support, Assistant Roadmaster, Roadmaster, and Division Engineer.

Program Details:

Duration: June 9, 2025 – August 1, 2025
Number of Positions: 16
monthly Salary: $4,875
Location: Multiple locations across the western U.S. (see list below)
Work Schedule: Full-time (40 hours/week), in a 24×7 operations environment, subject to on-call, overtime, nights, alternating shifts, weekends, and holidays.
Travel: Up to 75% travel required, with relocation potential based on business needs.
Training: Two-day orientation in Fort Worth, Texas, followed by project support and field training at an assigned location.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:
• Legally authorized to work in the U.S. and at least 18 years old upon hire.
• No sponsorship required for work authorization.
• Ability to work in a 24/7 environment, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and perform duties outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Able and willing to relocate anywhere within the BNSF operating system and travel up to 75% of the time.
• Pursuing a Bachelor’s or Graduate degree in Engineering (Industrial, Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Structural, etc.), Construction Management, Business, or a related field from an accredited university.
• Minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA.
• Less than three years of professional work experience (excluding internships, part-time jobs, or positions held while pursuing a degree).
• Reliable transportation.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior internship experience or less than 3 years of work experience in Engineering, Supply Chain, Business, Construction, Logistics, or a related field.
• Leadership experience in campus, community, or extracurricular organizations.
