The Role: Summer Internship Program

Newport News Shipbuilding offers comprehensive internships designed to provide students with invaluable experience in technical or administrative positions. These programs not only foster professional development but also offer the potential for future full-time employment opportunities with our organization.

Please note: Some engineering, technical, and waterfront positions may necessitate the ability to physically access a wide variety of work sites. This includes navigating aboard ships under various stages of construction or overhaul, which may involve the use of vertical and inclined ladders, and may require limited kneeling, stooping, and standing.

Must-Have Qualifications

Candidates for the Summer Internship Program must meet the following essential criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years of age before the start of the summer intern program (Mid-May).
  • Be enrolled in a degreed program that supports the company’s business requirements. Typically, these areas include:
    • Electrical Engineering
    • Mechanical Engineering
    • Civil/Structural Engineering
    • Business
    • Management
    • Accounting
    • Economics/Finance
  • Have attended a college or university and completed at least one year of coursework by May.
  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher (Official transcripts will be required).
  • Attend a college/university (undergraduate or graduate program) in the fall following the internship.
  • Successfully complete a criminal background investigation and a hair follicle drug screen.
  • Be able to work a 40-hour work week for a minimum of 10 weeks during the summer.
