Summer 2027 Federal Audit Intern | Sikich

The Tone:
This is a temporary internship at Sikich, located in Alexandria, VA with a hybrid work model. • Mission: Provide assistance and support to federal accounting or audit project teams to ensure accuracy and effectiveness of client data and reports.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Support: Provide direct assistance and support to accounting or audit project teams under the supervision of senior personnel.
• Analyze: Obtain, analyze, and evaluate data from clients to perform tests that substantiate transactions, records, and reports.
• Review: Review documents, transactions, records, reports, and methods for accuracy and overall effectiveness.
• Document: Prepare sufficient documentation to support all work performed, including detailed workpapers and summarized data reports.
• Report: Report task progress and status to senior, manager, or principal team members consistently and effectively.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Entry-Level. Must hold Junior or Senior status at the time of the internship, actively engaged in an accounting, cost accounting, or auditing program at an accredited college or university.
• Experience: An interest in pursuing CPA credentials, an interest in federal auditing and/or federal consulting, and prior experience utilizing Microsoft Suite applications. Must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship now or in the future.
• Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, ability to work independently, a servant leader approach focused on engaging and developing others, solutions-focused mindset to identify and implement effective solutions, strong collaboration skills to build relationships, the ability to instill trust through integrity and consistency, and an aptitude for impact & influence to gain support for initiatives.
• Bonus: Knowledge of Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board (FASAB) Statements, Government Accountability Office’s (GAO’s) Government Auditing Standards (GAS), American Institute of Certified Public Accountants’ (AICPA’s) AU-Cs, GAO/Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) Financial Audit Manual (FAM), GAO Federal Information System Controls Audit Manual (FISCAM), Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Bulletin 24-02, Audit Requirements for Federal Financial Statements (as amended), and other federal reporting and accounting requirements such as U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) bulletins and circulars, and the U.S. Standard General Ledger (USSGL).
