Job Description: Student Nurse Intern

The Student Nurse Intern position at Phelps Health provides an opportunity to work under the general supervision of a licensed nurse, performing various duties related to patient treatment and care.

Key Responsibilities:

Direct Patient Care: Providing direct patient care, considering age and developmental needs, and assisting patients in activities of daily living such as bathing, hair care, oral hygiene, personal grooming, skin care, repositioning, ambulating, range of motion exercises, and transfer techniques.
Nutritional Support: Meeting patients’ nutritional needs by providing water, preparing patients for meals, checking and passing trays, assisting with feeding, recording food intake, complying with dietary restrictions, and ensuring snacks are delivered and recorded.
Monitoring and Specimen Collection: Collecting specimens, performing vital signs measurements, and documenting intake and output.
Technical Procedures: Performing sit baths, postmortem care, applying TED hose and sequential compression devices, K-pads, ice packs, and binders.
Quality Improvement: Serving in a lead role for Performance Improvement (PI) initiatives and encouraging employee involvement and teamwork.
Credentialed Procedures: Performing technical procedures and nursing interventions for which credentialing exists, while adhering to policy guidelines.
Communication: Communicating closely with the patient’s primary nurse.
Oxygen Therapy: Maintaining and monitoring oxygen therapy.
Catheter Management: Inserting and removing urinary catheters.
Intravenous Therapy: Discontinuing intravenous therapy.
Airway Management: Performing nasopharyngeal suctioning.
Wound Care: Performing dressing changes, wound care, and skin management interventions.
Patient Assessments: Conducting patient assessments and reviewing them with the primary nurse.
Range of Motion: Administering continuous passive range of motion.
Injections: Administering Intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
NG Tube Management: NG tube insertion and maintenance.
Patient Education: Educating patients and families in conjunction with the primary nurse.
Supervision: Performing all clinical skills in conjunction with the mentoring nurse.
Reporting: Notifying the appropriate licensed nurse immediately of any noted changes in patient condition (vital signs, level of consciousness) or patient/family complaints and concerns.
Documentation: Documenting activities related to patient care in the Medical Record and other designated forms. Ensuring documentation accurately reflects the care delivered, including vital signs, intake and output, specimen labeling, Patient Data Base completion, meal/snack intake, and all interventions/assessments.

Qualifications:

Education: Currently enrolled in a School of Nursing or an individual who has completed a nursing program but does not meet licensing requirements.
Experience: Entry-level role, no prior experience required.

Physical/Mental Requirements:

• Requires considerable mental concentration.
• Involves frequent heavy lifting, turning activities, and nearly constant walking.
• Requires carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.

Working Conditions:

• Involves frequent exposure to infectious diseases, radiation, anti-neoplastic agents, and potentially hostile persons.
• Frequent exposure to communicable diseases via blood and other body fluids.
• Minimal physical discomfort.
