Student intern | Boston Medical Center (BMC)
The Tone:
This is a full-time internship at Boston Medical Center, located in Boston, MA. This Student Intern role within the Department of Public Safety is critical for supporting essential police, security, parking, transportation, and control center operations. Your contributions will directly help maintain a safe and secure environment for patients, visitors, and staff.

• Team: Public Safety Department; reports to Public Safety Supervisor or Public Safety Desk Officer.
• Mission: Ensures consistent and safe service delivery throughout the medical center by performing critical public safety, security, and operational functions.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Respond to Incidents: Immediately and appropriately address all requests for assistance, including stat requests, emergencies, contingencies, and disaster situations, while documenting actions taken.
• Maintain Security and Access: Patrol BMC property and grounds, provide safety and cash transfer escorts, and manage access control to ensure compliance with medical center policies.
• Investigate and Mitigate Risks: Conduct thorough investigations of suspicious activities, hazards, criminal acts (e.g., larceny, assault), process evidence, interview parties, and take necessary police or mitigating actions.
• Engage the Community: Apply strong customer service skills and community policing philosophies to build relationships, provide information, and use de-escalation techniques in emotionally charged situations.
• Support Desk Operations: Perform Public Safety Desk Officer duties by coordinating staff activities, prioritizing incident responses, maintaining chain of custody for property, and monitoring electronic security systems.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Student level, requiring a High School Diploma; an Associate’s Degree or equivalent is preferred.
• Experience: Six months to one year of security and customer service experience is preferred.
• Skills:
• Ability to effectively respond to and manage various incidents, including emergencies and investigations.
• Strong customer service, de-escalation techniques, and interpersonal communication.
• Proficient in objective incident reporting, clear documentation, and attention to detail.
• Capability to operate a motor vehicle legally in Massachusetts.
• Ability to be appointed and maintain status as a Special State Police Officer or Special Officer, including CPR certification.
• Bonus:
• Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Firearms Identification Card or License to carry a firearm, if required for the role.
