About the Stores Executive Leadership Internship
This is a paid, 40-hour/week, hands-on training program designed to provide a valuable and realistic preview of the Executive Team Leader (Assistant Store Manager) role. As a Stores Executive Intern, you will experience firsthand what it’s like to lead a retail team within a Target store. You will work closely with managers and team members to understand Target’s retail business and what it takes to excel in a management position. While introduced to various areas, the majority of your time will be spent leading the team, identifying and working towards store priorities, and delivering exceptional guest service. This program prioritizes your development through ongoing developmental conversations and mentorship.
Pay & Benefits
- Hourly Pay Range: $26.75 – $27.75. Pay is determined by factors such as labor markets, education, work experience, and certifications.

What You’ll Learn & Develop (Skills)
The Stores Executive Internship aims to provide meaningful experiences that build skills for a career in retail leadership. You will gain experience in:
- Guest Service Fundamentals: Building and managing a guest-first team culture across the store.
- Guest Engagement: Problem-solving and resolution skills.
- Retail Business Fundamentals: Understanding the core operations of a retail business.
- Workload Management: Setting and planning department(s) monthly/quarterly workload to support business priorities.
- Team Leadership: Managing hourly team members and team leaders to deliver service and sales goals.
- Talent Management: Recruiting, selecting, and developing hourly team members and leaders.
- Operational Performance: Driving guest experience and impacting financial, team, and operational performance.
- Merchandising: Learning to effectively merchandise products.
- Mentorship: Working alongside a mentor and learning effective leadership within a department.
Key Responsibilities
While no two days are exactly alike, a typical day as a Stores Executive Intern will likely include:
- On-Floor Leadership: Spending time on the sales floor and backroom, leading team members and aligning them on daily business priorities.
- Shadowing & Collaboration: Working alongside your Executive Team Lead (ETL) mentor and other leaders to understand their roles.
- Daily Operations Leadership: Leading through daily priorities such as stocking shelves, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment, and helping build in-store displays.
- Performance Management: Partnering with leaders on team member performance through teaching, coaching, training, and delivering timely feedback.
- Problem Solving: Addressing team member concerns and removing hurdles to ensure smooth operations and goal attainment.
- Team Communication: Leading and presenting at daily huddles with peer/leadership teams.
- Goal Setting: Planning daily goals and organizing plans within the building, working with store leaders each day to set expectations.
- Reporting & Analysis: Providing summaries of results and priorities, and understanding business reporting and guest insights to identify, troubleshoot, and follow up on opportunity areas.
- Exceptional Guest Experience: Ensuring team members are knowledgeable and empowered to make things right for guests.
- Innovation: Providing new ideas and recommending solutions to business or team opportunities.
- Continuous Learning: Taking initiative to learn Target’s leadership expectations, seeking out growth opportunities, asking questions, and seeking feedback.
- Program Participation: Actively participating in internship program training activities, developmental opportunities, and events.
- Risk-Taking: Demonstrating a willingness to take risks, step out of your comfort zone, and take on new assignments.

- Prior Experience: Previous retail experience preferred, but not required.
Basic Physical Requirements & Expectations
- Access all areas of the building to respond to guest or team member issues.
- Interpret instructions, reports, and information.
- Accurately handle cash register operations as needed.
- Climb up and down ladders as needed.
- Scan, handle, and move merchandise efficiently and safely, including frequently lifting or moving merchandise up to 10 pounds and occasionally moving merchandise up to 40 pounds.
- Ability to communicate on multiple frequency devices and operate handheld scanners and other technology equipment as directed.
- Flexible Work Schedule: Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays is essential, with reliable and prompt regular attendance.
