State & Local Tax Manager- National Tax | Baker Tilly
The Tone:
This is a full-time Manager role at Baker Tilly, with a preferred location on the East Coast near one of the firm’s offices. Baker Tilly is a leading advisory, tax and assurance firm, providing clients with a genuine coast-to-coast and global advantage. This role serves as a firmwide technical resource, providing leadership, guidance, and practical solutions across all areas of state taxation. This position partners closely with client-facing teams and practice offices to monitor evolving state tax developments, address complex technical matters, and strengthen compliance capabilities.

• Mission: This person solves complex state tax issues, monitors new developments, and translates technical tax concepts into actionable guidance for internal and external audiences.
What You’ll Actually Do
• Research: Conduct in-depth technical research and analysis of complex state and local tax matters across multiple jurisdictions and tax types.
• Monitor: Monitor and evaluate new and proposed state tax legislation, regulations, and judicial decisions, assessing their potential impact on clients and the firm’s practice.
• Resource: Serve as a national technical resource, collaborating with practice leaders and client-facing teams to provide guidance on complex, significant, or emerging state and local tax matters.
• Content Creation: Draft and review internal and external tax alerts, technical updates, articles, and presentations, translating complex tax concepts into clear and actionable guidance.
• Training: Develop and deliver technical training, webinars, and other educational programs to share knowledge and enhance SALT capabilities across the firm.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field. This is a Manager-level role within a national tax organization with a focus on state and local tax.
• Experience: 5+ years of experience in state and local tax. Experience in a client-serving professional services firm is preferred.
• Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including experience drafting technical memoranda and tax analyses. Strong analytical, organizational, project management, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
• Bonus: Master’s in Taxation or LLM. CPA and/or JD required, with JD/LLM highly preferred. Interest in developing specialized expertise and serving as a technical resource.
