Staff Accountant I – Financial Reporting STAT | Security Benefit

This is a full-time Staff Accountant I role at Security Benefit, with hybrid work options available in Overland Park, Kansas, Topeka, Kansas, or Des Moines, Iowa. • Mission: Support the accurate preparation, analysis, and reporting of reinsurance settlement statements in accordance with U.S. STAT.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Prepare: Reinsurance settlement statements and supporting schedules, prioritizing accuracy, control integrity, and strict adherence to U.S. STAT accounting principles.
• Support: The comprehensive monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring full adherence to control requirements and meeting all critical timelines.
• Assist: In maintaining robust internal controls over the reinsurance processes, which includes executing precise journal entries, performing reconciliations, and ensuring proper disclosures.
• Analyze: Financial statements diligently to identify significant trends, verify the accuracy of reported results, and provide summarized findings for review by the Manager.
• Build: And maintain strong collaborative working relationships with internal stakeholders across the Finance and Internal Controls departments to ensure clear communication and process alignment.
The Must-Haves
• Background: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a closely related field is required, positioning this as an early career opportunity for a dedicated accounting professional.
• Experience: Possessing 1+ years of accounting or financial reporting experience is preferred; candidates should have proven experience working with ERP systems (with a preference for PeopleSoft or Oracle Fusion) and intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and the broader Microsoft Office Suite.
• Skills: Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, coupled with high attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy in all work product; effective verbal and written communication skills for summarizing findings and collaborating effectively across teams; strong organizational skills and time management abilities to meet critical deadlines and manage competing priorities with close supervision; the capacity to work independently on assigned tasks while actively contributing to a collaborative team environment; and a high level of integrity with a commitment to compliance and ethical standards in all financial reporting activities, alongside a growth mindset.
• Bonus: Prior experience within the insurance industry would be a significant advantage for this role.
