Staff Accountant | Gruver Zweifel & Scott, LLP

The Tone:
This is a full-time, in-person role at Gruver Zweifel & Scott, LLP, located in the Oneonta, NY area. The firm is seeking an early-career professional eager to develop practical experience across audits, tax preparation, financial reporting, and accounting support. This position is ideal for someone committed to building a long-term public accounting career and living in the Oneonta community. The Staff Accountant will play a key role in supporting partners, managers, and senior staff while directly engaging with clients.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Support audit engagements for nonprofit organizations, school districts, and governmental entities, managing tasks from planning and confirmations through fieldwork and final workpapers.
• Prepare federal and state individual, business, and nonprofit tax returns utilizing client source documents and financial information.
• Perform detailed audit procedures, gather and evaluate supporting documentation, and clearly document all work performed and conclusions reached.
• Reconcile tax input to return output, compare results with prior years, update depreciation schedules, and prepare questions for partner review.
• Assist with reviews, compilations, bank reconciliations, adjusting entries, client questions, and research tax and accounting issues to discuss findings with senior staff.

• Experience: No specific prior professional experience required, but a readiness to develop practical experience across audits, tax preparation, financial reporting, and accounting support.
• Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, effective collaboration with clients, staff, and partners, strong organization, attention to detail, and follow-through on assignments within reasonable deadlines.
• Bonus: An interest in continuing professional education, a strong work ethic, and a desire to build a long-term public accounting career in the Oneonta area.
