Staff Accountant | Aston Carter

The Tone:
This is a Contract to Hire position at Aston Carter, located in Jersey City, NJ, offering a hybrid work schedule after an initial training period. This role is crucial for maintaining the integrity of financial records by ensuring accurate and timely journal entries, reconciling balance sheet and cash accounts, and facilitating smooth operational communications within the financial accounting department.

• Team: Reports to a Manager of Financial Accounting, works with five staff accountants including one senior accountant.
• Mission: Ensure accurate and timely financial record-keeping through precise journal entries, account reconciliations, and effective operational communication.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Reconcile Accounts: Accurately reconcile balance sheet accounts for 1-2 legal entities using Blackline, and also reconcile all cash accounts, including ATM and loose cash.
• Manage Communications: Handle essential communications with armored services and oversee yard communications to ensure precise daily reconciliations at the facility level.
• Process Journal Entries: Prepare and enter various journal entries, including ad hoc entries during month-end close, payroll, amortization, depreciation, allocations, non-trade accruals, line-of-credit, and banking transactions.
• Ensure Accuracy & Timeliness: Complete all account reconciliations for designated accounting periods without material errors and strictly within established departmental timelines.
• Clear Outstanding Checks: Review and analyze outstanding check lists for outdated and stale checks, following up with vendors, suppliers, or individuals to ensure accuracy and clearance.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Possess a Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or economics, providing the essential academic foundation for an entry-level role in financial accounting.
• Experience: No specific years of professional experience are explicitly required, though a strong foundational understanding of accounting principles is paramount for success in this role.
• Skills: Demonstrate an understanding of fundamental accounting concepts, specifically the difference between debits and credits; exhibit eagerness to learn and capable self-management with a proactive attitude, particularly in a remote work environment.
