The Tone:
This Staff Accountant role is a vital position at a nonprofit organization, recruited by firstPRO, Inc. The successful candidate will be instrumental in supporting the day-to-day accounting operations. This role is crucial for maintaining the financial health and operational transparency of a mission-driven entity. By meticulously managing general accounting processes, preparing financial reports, and ensuring accuracy in all transactions, the Staff Accountant directly contributes to the organization’s ability to achieve its objectives and effectively serve its community.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Financial Closing & Reporting: Lead support for the comprehensive month-end close process, encompassing the preparation of various journal entries, meticulous accruals, precise allocations, and thorough account reconciliations. Furthermore, you will be responsible for maintaining the integrity of the general ledger and preparing essential financial reports, including detailed balance sheets and accurate income statements.
• Transaction & Schedule Management: Prepare and maintain critical supporting schedules for items such as prepaid expenses, insurance policies, and investment portfolios. This also involves the accurate recording of all related financial transactions to ensure complete and transparent financial records.
• Financial Review & Resolution: Conduct detailed reviews of budget-to-actual activity, scrutinize purchase orders, and analyze account balances. You will actively research any identified discrepancies and implement necessary adjustments to maintain financial accuracy and compliance.
• Operational Accounting Support: Provide essential assistance across various day-to-day accounting operations, including precise grant billing, managing HUD fund drawdowns, processing accounts payable, recording deposits, and handling other cash-related activities.
• Audit & Project Contribution: Actively support annual financial audits, contribute to Board reporting presentations, and assist with various ad-hoc accounting projects. This involves ensuring the accurate and timely completion of all assigned tasks to uphold financial integrity and meet organizational objectives.
The Must-Haves
• Background: A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is preferred, establishing a strong academic foundation. Crucially, candidates must possess a robust knowledge base in general accounting principles, comprehensive bookkeeping practices, accurate journal entries, thorough reconciliations, and adherence to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Experience: Required accounting experience is essential, with a preference for candidates who have gained this experience within a nonprofit or mission-driven environment, understanding its unique financial nuances.
• Skills: Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and the broader Microsoft Office Suite is a must. The ideal candidate will be highly organized and detail-oriented, exhibiting strong written and verbal communication skills, along with a proven ability to manage multiple deadlines effectively.
• Bonus: Prior hands-on experience with Sage Intacct accounting software is preferred, alongside specific accounting experience within a nonprofit environment.
