Job Description
Software Engineering Intern | Joby Aviation
The Tone:
This is an internship at Joby Aviation, located in an immediate area requiring in-person attendance. Joby Aviation is dedicated to making piloted air taxis a reality, currently in the final stages of certifying its aircraft. The company also builds essential internal software tools that support the design, manufacturing, and certification of these aircraft. This role is critical for delivering user-facing features in these tools, which aggregate and fuse data, leverage AI-assisted workflows, and are used daily by engineers across the company.
The TL;DR
• Role: Internship
• Location: In-person
• Pay: $22–$31 hourly
• Team: Small team of full-stack and data engineers
• Mission: Ship user-facing features in internal software tools crucial for aircraft design, manufacturing, and certification.
• Tech Stack: React, JavaScript, HTML/CSS, TypeScript, REST APIs, Git, Databricks, Python, FastAPI, LangGraph, OpenAI Agents SDK, Recharts, D3, Plotly, SQL
What You’ll Actually Do
• Develop User Interfaces: Build and ship React components for data-dense tables, interactive charts, filter controls, and detail views used by engineers across the company.
• Integrate Backend Services: Wire up REST endpoints, manage client-side state, and handle loading, error, and empty states cleanly.
• Support AI Features: Contribute to the development of agentic systems that help users digest information, with hands-on work on prompt engineering and agentic harness development.
• Engineer Data Pipelines: Support the development of data pipelines that connect engineering change request systems using Databricks.
• Refine User Experience & Quality: Gather feedback from engineers, refine user experience, translate ambiguous requirements into well-scoped tickets, write tests, and participate in code review.
The Must-Haves
• Background: Student. Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
• Experience: Hands-on experience building user-facing interfaces with React (or a comparable modern frontend framework such as Vue or Svelte) through coursework, internships, hackathons, or personal projects; familiarity with Git and standard collaborative development workflows.
• Skills: Solid working knowledge of JavaScript and HTML/CSS; comfort with TypeScript or willingness to ramp up quickly; comfort consuming REST APIs; strong written and verbal communication.
• Bonus: Production-style experience with TypeScript; exposure to data visualization libraries such as Recharts, D3, or Plotly; SQL experience; experience with Python and FastAPI, building ETL or data pipelines on Databricks, or working with AI agent frameworks such as LangGraph or the OpenAI Agents SDK; interest in or exposure to LLM-integrated applications (prompting, agents, tool use, retrieval-augmented generation, Model Context Protocol); prior internship, co-op, or substantial open-source or personal-project contribution; interest in aerospace, manufacturing, or hardware-adjacent software.
