Job Description

Position: Software Engineering Intern – First-Year Bachelor’s Students

About Two Sigma:
Two Sigma is a leading financial sciences company that ingeniously combines data analysis, invention, and rigorous inquiry to tackle the most formidable challenges across investment management, insurance technology, securities, private equity, and venture capital. Our distinctive advantage is driven by cutting-edge technology, where software engineers play a truly pivotal role. We are a team of scientists, technologists, and academics who think beyond conventional boundaries to develop creative solutions for some of the world’s most complex economic problems.

The Software Engineering Role at Two Sigma:
As a software engineer at Two Sigma, your focus will span analysis, experimentation, design, and elegant implementation. You will be instrumental in building the scalable tools and infrastructure essential for exploring the vast possibilities of data, acting on our findings, and attempting to predict the future. We champion a rigorous, collaborative, and scientific approach, committed to building future-ready software that scales with the company’s growth.

We attract engineers who possess a true passion for data and a desire to build for today while inventing for tomorrow. We highly value curiosity and insight, balanced with pragmatism and practicality, recognizing both incremental progress and grand visions. While our domain is finance, financial experience is explicitly not a requirement; we seek critical thinkers passionate about technology.

About the First-Year Internship Program:
This unique internship opportunity is specifically open to students currently enrolled in their first year of a 4-year Bachelor’s program. We are actively seeking a diverse set of software engineering interns to join our high-achieving team, which includes esteemed individuals such as a Unix Lifetime Achievement winner, Putnam medalists, ACM Programming competition finalists, and International Mathematics Olympiad medalists. You will be in excellent company, surrounded by ambitious individuals who share a common goal and a love for learning.

Two Sigma is deeply committed to fostering diversity within the technology and financial services industries. We strongly encourage students who are members of historically underrepresented groups to apply.

The summer internship program is an intensive 10-week experience, taking place at our vibrant Soho-based New York City office. Each intern will be paired with an assigned mentor and will work on a single, impactful project throughout the internship, culminating in a final presentation. Beyond project work, interns have the chance to attend all Two Sigma events, from brown bag lunches to our ongoing guest speaker series. We also host intern-specific social events to facilitate networking with other Two Sigma employees and to explore all that New York City has to offer.

Interns are hired into a general Software Engineering role and will be matched to a specific team approximately 2-3 months prior to their start date.

Key Responsibilities You Will Take On:

  • Building the underlying infrastructure leveraged by nearly all other engineering teams, including distributed storage and public/private cloud environments.
  • Ensuring the reliability of “mission critical” products and systems vital to Two Sigma, such as our main trading system.
  • Utilizing a suite of open source and proprietary tools to construct environments for testing and deploying quantitative strategies (models).
  • Developing and maintaining low-latency, high-performance infrastructure and systems crucial for executing trades.
  • Building and scaling the infrastructure required to ingest data from over 10,000 sources daily.
  • Partnering with our Corporate teams to develop tools, systems, and products designed to increase productivity and efficiency across the organization.

Qualifications You Should Possess:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree (first-year student) in a technical or quantitative field.
  • Experience with programming languages such as Java, C, C++, Python, Ruby, Perl, or other JVM-targeting languages.
  • Demonstrated experience or strong interest in large-scale systems.
  • Exceptional programming skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • A genuine passion for building quality software.
  • We seek critical thinkers who are passionate about technology; prior financial experience is not required.

Benefits You Will Enjoy:

  • Competitive Compensation: The weekly base pay for this role will be $2,900/Week. This role may also be eligible for other forms of compensation and/or benefits.
  • Onsite Perks: Access to onsite gyms with laundry service, various wellness activities, casual dress code, complimentary snacks, and engaging game rooms.
  • Hybrid Work Policy: Enjoy flexible in-office days complemented by a budget for home office setup.
