Software Engineer Intern | Akima

The Tone:
This is an internship at Akima, an Alaska Native Corporation (ANC) and federal contractor, located in Huntsville, AL, working with its operating company, Pinnacle Solutions. Akima is a global enterprise that delivers agile solutions to government customers across core areas such as information technology, systems engineering, and mission support. Beyond federal projects, Akima’s mission actively supports its 15,000 Iupiat shareholders in Alaska by providing vital support and employment opportunities, contributing to the survival of their unique culture. This role offers an enthusiastic student the opportunity to learn new technologies, contribute meaningfully to ongoing software projects, and develop an innovative application as part of a STEM Capstone project. As an intern, your daily work will significantly impact both government customers and the Alaskan Native communities Akima serves.

The TL;DR

• Type: Temporary (May 28, 2026 – August 1, 2026)
• Location: Huntsville, AL (On-Site)

• Team: Collaborates with experienced Pinnacle Solutions engineers, one of Akima’s operating companies.
• Mission: To learn new technologies, contribute meaningfully to ongoing software projects, and develop an innovative application during the internship term, supporting Akima’s services for government customers and its Alaska Native Corporation mission.
• Tech Stack: Proficiency in at least one coding language, training provided for specific applications and tools used in software development. Familiarity with Windows operating systems and common software applications.

What You’ll Actually Do
• Contribute: Collaborate with experienced Pinnacle engineers on ongoing projects and develop an innovative application for a STEM Capstone project.
• Train: Receive training on various applications and tools utilized in software development.
• Collaborate: Work with different departments to gain a comprehensive understanding of business operations.
• Network: Network with professionals within the company and industry, receiving guidance and mentorship from experienced engineers and professional leaders.

The Must-Haves
• Background: Candidates must be currently enrolled and actively pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree from an accredited college/university. This role requires a major in a Computer Science-related field, and applicants must be an upcoming Junior or Senior in their academic program.
• Experience: Strong candidates will demonstrate proficiency in at least one coding language; however, specific language knowledge is not required as training will be provided. Applicants should possess a basic understanding of core IT concepts, including hardware, software, networks, and security, alongside familiarity with Windows operating systems and common software applications.
• Skills: Possess a self-motivated and eager-to-learn attitude, coupled with a strong technical aptitude and a passion for technology and problem-solving. The ability to work effectively in a team environment is essential. Candidates must maintain an overall cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Additionally, applicants must be within commuting distance to Huntsville, AL, as housing will not be provided for this on-site internship.
